About Luca
Luca is an Italian restaurant at 88 St John St in London, opened in 2016 and awarded a Michelin star in April 2023. The menu includes roast scallops with artichoke and duck agnolotti, with tiramisu among the desserts, and a chef's menu runs alongside. The Bar and The Dining Room are the main spaces. A lunch bar menu is served in the first room, where a limited set of tables, the largest seating four, offers a choice of 3 starters and 3 mains. Groups can book one of the private dining rooms. Customer Review Summary
Parmesan fries are the most repeated order, recommended by several diners, and cheese fries are called exceptional alongside the sourdough, though one reviewer found them tasting of neither parmesan nor potato. Roast scallops come close behind, served with artichoke and recommended alongside the pork loin and the crudo. Others single out the pumpkin pasta, the octopus sorpresine and the olive oil, and the cheaper bar lunch is called good value with delicious food. Complaints centre on inconsistency. One diner found the courgette tortelloni nearly empty of filling and the rabbit tagliatelle very salty, another had rigatoni with no taste, and a third called the pork chop rubbery and overcooked. On the chef's menu, one reviewer describes long gaps between courses, small portions and forgotten drinks, while others mention many different staff serving one table. Still, reviewers praise the wine and the romantic setting, and the tiramisu is called authentic, with a chocolate tart and a custard tart also named.

“Came for the cheaper lunch bar menu and it was excellent. We paid just under 100£ for two for two starters, two mains, one side and one dessert. Plenty of food and everything was delicious and presented in a Michelin style. The pumpkin pasta for me was the best dish. My wife loved the Jerusalem artichokes. Tiramisu was super authentic and delicious too. Bar lunch is served in the first room where you arrive and there are only a set number of tables with the largest being for four. So you can’t get the fix lunch menu for 8 people for example. The menu is fairly limited, you get to choose from 3 starters and 3 mains. BUT it’s pretty good value for the delicious food you are getting. Most of the staff were friendly but I thought the manager was a bit obnoxious and artificial. I’d expect him to be the life of the restaurant, but quite the opposite. 15% discretionary service charge is really pushing it.”

“Had dinner last Friday . There were four of us . The place and atmosphere is nice . The service is A mixed bag. Food was terrible . Started with the pork ragu . Seems it was either stale or had a hygiene issue. Two out of the four had it and were not feeling well in the morning . Mains pork chop, this looked great however was rubbery and overcooked . Basically the quality of produce was substandard ! We had two bottles of wine between us four . Not a venue we will return to . Rating 3.9”

“This place is just very disappointing; I just don't think they know what they are. They are sort of trying to be a fine-dining place—with the pricing and portion sizes at least—but inside it just looks and feels like a normal restaurant (we sat in a booth like a diner?), and the food isn't special in any way. They appear to be trying a little with the service, but then the waiter couldn't be bothered to pour out our drinks and just left the bottles and glasses on the table. We had the parmesan fries, which I don't really understand. Are they potatoes with grated parmesan on top, or made of parmesan, in which case why put the grated parmesan on? Either way, they didn't taste of parmesan or potato. If you call something "parmesan fries," then you would assume they are made of parmesan? The pasta dishes were between £28 and £48, so you would expect something a little special. I got the courgette tortelloni. Okay, tortelloni should be bigger than tortellini, hence the "-loni" on the end, as these are typically filled lots more than tortel"-lini". Well, I was hunting for any filling, and I couldn't identify what was in there. Two of them appeared to be filled with a green liquid which just tasted like mint (which wasn't on the ingredients list), and the others were rock hard and almost empty with something that looked a bit like seaweed, had no flavour, and was unpleasant to eat. I wonder if they were going for a deconstructed filling with some chunks of ricotta and a few tasteless tomatoes. I think the green sauce was courgettes and water, but didn't taste of much, and the yellow sauce was nicer, which had a taste of honey at least. My partner had tagliatelle with rabbit, which was exactly what she got. Super salty rabbit chunks (very clumsy for fine dining) with extra salty broth and salty olives. The portion was large, which added to the confusion. At this point, we decided to call it a day and not continue wasting money. I told the waitress how disappointing it was; she didn't really have anything to say, just that they would take it on board. Not sure how they got a Michelin star or the good reviews, it must of gone downhill recently.”

“We went there for my wife’s birthday. After a great cocktail at the bar, we went to our table for dinner. The waitress was not aware we’ve already been at the bar for a pre-drink and brings the same cocktail menu. That would be ok, if the rest of the service was better, but it was very average… our waitress was more interested in talking with the over numerous staff. Eventually, more than 6 people (as I remember) came to serve us, no continuity in the service, looked messy, not well managed. That being said, the food was average. My wife had the some rigatoni with 0 taste, while my tortellini were good. After, she had a seabass that was delicious and I had a pork loin that was very average. For the dessert, we were both disappointed with the previous dishes, so, we skipped the sweet note you want to celebrate a birthday. Wines were great though, and the decoration too. The rest, very average experience.”
