Quick info
About Shu La La
On Holloway Rd in London, Shu La La is a Chinese restaurant that runs hotpot alongside a charcoal grill and a spicy Sichuan menu. The grill turns out lamb skewers and beef tendon skewers, with chicken heart, grilled vegetables, oysters and scallops also cooked over the coals. Spicy grilled pork belly is eaten wrapped in lettuce or vegetables. Noodle dishes include spicy, oil-drenched beef noodles with sesame paste sauce, made with hand-pulled noodles. The kitchen also serves Korean-style cold noodles with egg, kimchi, cucumber and beef, a change of pace from the heat elsewhere on the menu. A button-press game gives diners a shot at a free meal: stop the timer at exactly 10:00 seconds and the meal is on the house.

Customer Review Summary
Charcoal-grilled skewers anchor the praise, with the lamb skewers named most often and described as freshly grilled, smoky and well seasoned. One reviewer likens them to ones eaten on the beach in Qingdao. Beef tendon, chicken heart, pork intestine, gluten skewers and grilled vegetables with mushrooms come up alongside them. Close behind are the lamb ribs, served cut up with gloves, and the spicy grilled pork belly, which reviewers wrap in lettuce or vegetables so it feels lighter. The grilled pig trotter is called a highlight for its huge portion. Noodles round out the table: spicy oil drenched beef noodles with a rich sesame sauce, sour soup beef rice noodles, and refreshing Korean cold noodles with kimchi and egg. Grilled oysters and scallops also earn praise, and portions are repeatedly called generous and the food authentic and affordable. The one criticism concerns the staff, who one reviewer says keep to themselves and could show more enthusiasm. That same diner describes a button game that wins a free meal if pressed at exactly 10:00 seconds, and their table stopped at 10:01.

“We had such a great meal at Shu La La! The charcoal BBQ skewers were the highlight for us. We ended up ordering so many because they were all so good. My husband especially loved the lamb and beef skewers, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the gluten skewers. We also tried the spicy oil drenched beef noodles, which were packed with flavour and had a really rich, creamy sesame sauce. Everything tasted fresh, the portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable. We’ll definitely be back to try more from the menu.”

“Really enjoyed our meal at Shu La La! Every BBQ skewer we ordered was freshly grilled, well-seasoned and full of flavour. My favourites were definitely the scallops and oysters—they were fresh, juicy and cooked perfectly. We also tried the Sour Soup Beef Rice Noodles, which were rich and comforting, and the Salt & Pepper Squid, which was crispy and delicious. The atmosphere was great, and there’s also a nice World Cup promotion where you can enjoy a 2L draught beer for £19.90 while watching the match. We’ll definitely be back to try more!”
