About Charcoal Champ Chinese BBQ

Charcoal Champ Chinese BBQ is a Chinese restaurant at 142 York Wy in London, serving Northeastern-style barbecue built around skewers. Each table has a small grill stand that keeps the skewers warm while you eat, so a plate does not go cold between bites. The skewer list runs from pork belly to roasted lamb, and the kitchen also makes a mala soup with vegetables, meat and noodles. Orders are placed and paid for through an app rather than at a counter. The restaurant takes no reservations, and a queue is possible on Friday and Saturday nights.

Customer Review Summary

Grilled skewers are the draw, with reviewers repeatedly calling them flavourful and authentic and likening the street BBQ feel to China. Rice cakes come up most, alongside chicken wings, while individual reviewers name beef tendon, prawns, Taiwanese sausage, garlic scallops, pork belly skewers and roasted lamb. Close behind, the cucumber salad, Mala soup and fried sliced noodles earn praise, and several describe prompt service and a buzzy, lively room. Some say it is cheap and delicious. One reviewer found the broccoli a tad overcooked, and another noted a waitress who seemed less warm at first. The sharpest complaint comes from one reviewer who describes stale-tasting ingredients and dry, repeatedly grilled chicken skin, and who wondered whether unfinished food gets reheated for other tables. One reviewer notes there are no reservations and a possible queue on Friday and Saturday nights, and a small grill stand on each table keeps the skewers warm.

“My husband and I loved the food. We enjoyed especially the fried sliced noodles. I had various fish options and the shitake mushrooms which were all delicious! My husband enjoyed his meat skewers and sweet and sour pork. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time so it felt relaxed was air conditioned which we were grateful for. We didn't have much interaction with the waitress and she didn't come across that warm or friendly but I think she warmed up to us. Highly recommend this cute little restaurant just off the hustle and bustle of granary square!”

“Went here for a quick meal and this place did not disappoint! Affordable and delicious. We had pork belly skewers, chicken skewers, dumplings and then cucumber salad. The cucumber salad really stood out to me! So flavoursome and delicious - better than most places. I’ll definitely be returning.”

“Got there for 13:00 opening time in Sunday and the place was pretty much full. Most patrons Chinese so that was very encouraging. Not usual Chinese restaurant as very much focussed on barbecue. Enjoyed but need to come again to try other things on menu. Buzzy atmosphere and all orders taken and paid for via an app”

“A nice no frills grilled skewer restaurant. Be early if you wish to get a table without waiting. We had an early dinner at 5.30pm and ordered a selection of grilled dishes. There’s a small grill stand on each table to keep the skewers warm. We had the Mala soup with comes with vegetables, some meat and noodles. That was nice. Our food were served out very promptly. Particularly enjoyed the rice cakes and chicken wings. Thought that the broccoli was a tad overcooked. Service was fast and the lady here is efficient and friendly.”

“The ingredients were clearly not fresh. The chicken skin tasted like it had been grilled over and over again—dry and unpleasant. I couldn’t even continue after just one bite. It honestly made me wonder whether unfinished food might be reheated and served to other tables, which is quite concerning.”
