About Fei Er Cottage | Chinese Restaurant

Fei Er Cottage is a Chinese restaurant in the basement of the China Centre at 37 Strutton Ground, London, where a steam pot sits on the menu alongside traditional hot pot. The kitchen covers dim sum, Chinese roast and Sichuan dishes, with rice and noodles for quicker meals. Dumplings in chili oil, steamed buns filled with oyster mushroom or with cabbage and mushroom, and a smashed cucumber salad show the range of the menu. Portions are large, and food arrives quickly after ordering. Reservations are required, and the staff offer recommendations when asked.

Customer Review Summary

Dumplings are the draw here, with reviewers repeatedly calling them the best they have had, singling out the boiled dumplings in chilli oil and the freshly steamed soup dumplings. Close behind are the oyster mushroom bao buns and the cabbage and mushroom steamed buns, which a vegetarian reviewer orders every visit. Others praise the cucumber salad, beef brisket, beef chow fun, and a Sichuan pepper dish that one found light and refreshing. Several describe the food as authentic, one comparing it to restaurants in southern China, and a few say portions are generous for the price, with leftovers taken home. Service is called friendly and fast, and food arrives quickly. The one recurring reservation is atmosphere: one pair found the room sterile with no music playing, while others call it homey and soothing. One vegetarian notes the menu for meat-free diners is small, though what is there is good. One reviewer left with half a main dish boxed up.

“I always love popping in here on my way home after a walk. I'm veggie and always get the steamed buns (cabbage and mushroom) which always taste so fresh and have a lot of flavour. I also get the boiled dumplings in chilli sauce and am never disappointed. There's not a huge vegetarian menu here but I'm not really that bothered by it as what they do have is really nice. They also have spring rolls, smashed cucumber salad and salt and pepper tofu which I am yet to try! Definitely a nice place to pop into :)”

“These were probably the most excellent dumplings I‘ve ever had! The food was delivered to us very quickly and you could tell that the dumplings were freshly made. Extremely delicious. The stand out dishes were the dumplings in chili oil for us, since they were served with the most delicious sauce and the oyster mushroom bao buns. The only thing that was slightly off-putting was that there was no music on whatsoever which didn‘t make for the most laid back vibe. I‘m not sure if it‘s a licensing thing but me and my companion both agreed that some light music in the background would create a less 'sterile' atmosphere.”

“The service here is friendly and fast. And the food is very flavoursome; it is one of the best Chinese restaurants I’ve been to in London. Additionally, the portion sizes are very good for the price. Everytime I’ve gone, I’ve taken between 1/3 and 1/2 of my main dish home. I would highly recommend. It cost £23.50 per person for a shared starter and the food you can see in the attached image.”

“Really authentic sichuan restaurant with super homey vibes. Freshly steamed soup dumplings comparable to other really famous dim sum spots! I asked for a recommendation and they suggested this speciality sichuan pepper dish which was really light and refreshing with a really unique flavour.”

“My daughter and I enjoyed the most delicious meal here. I would describe the service as spot on and the atmosphere as 'soothing and welcoming'. Overnight it became our favourite Chinese restaurant. We ate the best-ever Dumplings, Cucumber Salad and Beef Brisket, all of which were recommended to us. I would have no hesitation in recommending Fei Er Cottage to others. I am certain I/we will be back, if in the area again. Thank you for a lovely evening.”
