About George

George is a pub in London at 75 Borough High St, and it is the last surviving galleried inn in the city, dating to the 17th century. Wooden galleries overlook a cobbled courtyard, a reminder of its past as a coaching inn. Inside, the pub has multiple bars, and a small restaurant sits in the upstairs gallery. A big outdoor screen shows live football and F1 on match nights, which draws crowds outside. Borough Market is a two-minute walk away, and London Bridge is close by. The bars serve pints of beer, including the local Mayflower ale.

Customer Review Summary

The caveats are real. Reviewers describe cramped seating, tables packed close together and noise that drowns out conversation, and one waited in line at least ten minutes just for drinks. Food draws mixed reactions. A mushroom bruschetta was called an interesting idea that didn't work, and one long-time lunch regular received a wrong Camembert and Mushroom Galette twice plus a medium sirloin that arrived nearly raw and full of gristle. The manager refunded the meal and offered a plate of chips.

“This pub is the real deal - an old coaching inn dating back to the 16th century, with the wooden galleries warmed with age, over looking a cobbled court yard. Inside are multiple bars, each serving a selection of quality beers, and dripping with history. Every time I come back to London I always need to have a drink here. Total recommendation.”

“This historic pub is full of charm and character. Although we didn't try the food, we thoroughly enjoyed a couple of excellent pints. The weather was so beautiful that everyone was sitting outside, which created a fantastic atmosphere. Because of that, we didn't get to experience the interior, which looked absolutely stunning through the windows. Instead, we admired the building from the outside, with its distinctive crooked windows and beautiful historic façade. To top it all off, there was football on that evening, and the atmosphere was buzzing. The combination of great beer, lively crowds, and the unique setting made it a memorable stop. Even without stepping inside, this is one of those classic London pubs that's well worth a visit.”

“I would only recommend this if you want some heritage experience and like crowded places. Every order took us being in line for at least 10min and this is only drinks. We didn’t dare to get any food and got a pizza and ate it on the road outside. The view is nice if you stand outside. You can hardly hear any conversation with your colleagues or friends because it too much noise.”

“A grand old galleried pub which is better to sit outside. I'm sure the large outdoor screen works well with football. The local mayflower ale was difficulty hippy. We had a mushroom bruschetta - interesting ideas but didn't work.”

“While visiting from Orem, Utah I found The George pub on a traveler website when I was looking for a great place to have Sunday Roast. I made reservations for my family of eight. We arrived at the pub only to discover that our reservations were for a time right in the middle of the Premier League finals and we were in Arsenal town! The energy and atmosphere in the yard and throughout the pub was electric and so fun! The food and service was outstanding, and I dare say that experience made us Arsenal fans for life.”
