Customer Review Summary
Friendly, welcoming staff are the most consistent draw at this pub, with reviewers describing polite, kind service that balances attentiveness with giving diners space. The food gets a more mixed reception. Fish and chips with mushy peas, a haddock finger sandwich with crispy fish and thick-cut chips, and a kilo of buffalo wings with blue cheese are singled out, along with a brunch healthy full and a steak. Others call the food fairly average or just ok, and one diner found that both items they ordered had run out, which they called disappointing. The long bar of taps, a large beer selection, quirky decor and a relaxed atmosphere come up repeatedly, and one reviewer notes that in summer people spill out into the street with their drinks. The spot beside the Monument suits casual lunches and a hen party held in the small upstairs room, where the team added a card and a complimentary prosecco. One diner with allergies recalls the chef coming out of the kitchen to discuss them in person.

“The Hydrant is best in the middle of summer - you won't find a seat inside, but it doesn't matter. People move out into the street with their drink of choice and mingle. It's a bonus that it's right next door to the monument for the Great Fire of London! I've not eaten here, but colleagues say the food is ok.”

“The food was fairly average overall—perfectly enjoyable, but nothing particularly memorable. What really stood out, however, was the level of service. The staff were consistently polite, kind, friendly and genuinely welcoming throughout our visit. I also want to give special recognition to the chef, who went above and beyond to accommodate my dietary requirements. Rather than simply sending a message through the waiting staff, they came out of the kitchen personally to discuss my allergies, answer my questions and make sure I could eat safely. That level of care and professionalism made a real difference and gave me a lot of confidence. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the team struck a great balance between being attentive and giving us space to enjoy our meal. While I think there's still room for the food itself to reach the same high standard as the service, the people working here are a real credit to the restaurant. I'd happily return because exceptional hospitality is something you remember long after you've finished eating. Thank you to everyone on the team.”
