About The Charcoal Hut
On Highfield St in Leicester, The Charcoal Hut is an East African restaurant built around a flame grill. The beef mishkaki is the centrepiece, and platters for two include a Ramadan platter that serves 2. Steaks and lamb chops sit alongside the gazebo chicken meals, with sides served next to the mains. The dining space is small. Parties of 15 or more can book in advance, with food orders placed on the day, which makes it workable for larger groups.

“We were a group of 16 booked for a 50th birthday meal. I spoke to Ibrahim prior to booking, and he went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience. The food was amazing—everyone enjoyed their meals, everything was cooked fresh, and the portions were very generous. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly. Thank you all for a very memorable experience. We will definitely be visiting again!”

“Lovely food and really friendly staff. Everyone was super attentive and helpful throughout our visit. One of the owners, Shenaz, was working hard and made us feel so welcome. Great prices too. Definitely a new favourite spot—we’ll be back!”

“We ordered the platter for 2, very generous portions, the food was really tasty and hot. The service was good. Good quality and overall value. Atmosphere is 3-5 star as it’s very small so when it’s busy it’s cramped with waiting staff walking past each other etc. I would recommend.”

“Been here a few times and have bought the family up and everyone can agree it’s one of the best places in Leicester. The flavours are very different from anything we’ve had before and the owners are so lovely! Definitely recommend. (We got the platter for 2 and the beef mishkaki)”

“Visited this restaurant on Highfield Street off London Road in Leicester for the first time recently. We had pre-booked a table for a group of 15+ people and were seated downstairs. Food orders had to be placed on the day rather than in advance, which was understandable. We ordered a mix of platters, gazebo chicken meals, sides, and drinks. The food was honestly very tasty, probably one of the better quality meals I’ve had at a restaurant in a while. It’s not the cheapest place, but definitely worth it for the quality. The service setting up plates and tables was a little slow considering we had booked ahead, but once the food arrived it came out on time, fresh, and piping hot. Staff were friendly and the restaurant was child friendly too. One thing to mention is that if you’re seated downstairs and have elderly people with you, the stairs are quite steep, so just be careful. The only thing missing for me was hot drinks on the menu,a tea or coffee after the meal would have been perfect. Overall, I’d definitely recommend giving this place a visit if you haven’t been already.”

Customer Review Summary
The platter for two is what reviewers raise most, described as generous, hot and tasty, with the Ramadan platter served for iftar. Close behind are the steaks and lamb chops, called perfectly marbled, along with the gazebo chicken, described as soft and flavourful, and the beef mishkaki. Sides get praise too, and several say the portions and quality justify the prices. Staff come up repeatedly as friendly and attentive, and one server swapped a beef steak for a lamb chop for a diner who didn't eat beef. Another offered a baby unseasoned mash. The main complaints concern the space. Reviewers describe the downstairs lounge as loud, cramped and a bit claustrophobic, with waiting staff squeezing past each other when busy. One notes steep stairs for elderly guests and slow plate and table setup despite a group booking, and another missed having tea or coffee on the menu. Large groups of 15 and 16 booked birthday and family meals, and one reviewer said the food still arrived fresh and piping hot.
