About Maurizio's

Maurizio's is a family-run Neapolitan restaurant at 6 Hotel St in Leicester, where the kitchen draws on thirty years of experience operating in Italy. Ingredients are imported from Italy, and the menu covers Neapolitan cooking and pizzas across 115 dishes. Starters include Bruschetta With Prawns And Forest Mushrooms and Crostini Caprese, so the opening courses have more than one route. The business is listed as both a restaurant and a cafe. Several cold plates, among them Affettati and Formaggi, are portioned for two persons, which suits a table sharing a first course.

Customer Review Summary

Pizza is what most reviewers return for, with the char on the crust, the toppings and the mushroom and meat pizzas singled out, and several call it the best Italian they have had. The bruschetta follows, one reviewer praising its sweet tomatoes, and pasta and the imported Ichnuso beer also get mentions. Many describe a warm, family-run place that is a bit chaotic and home-like, with friendly staff, a complimentary digestive shot and a bowl of water brought for a dog. Some note the chef takes time to prepare food, though one found the wait worthwhile. The negative reviews are detailed. One reviewer says the mozzarella was bland, the tables were cramped, a knife was found on the floor and a server tripped over it, and getting the bill took around twenty minutes. Another reports finding a hair in a cannelloni, says the chefs laughed and suggested the diner put it there, and says the bruschetta was cancelled after a long wait. A third was told to leave after the pizza was boxed, then told to sit back down and eat.

“We had a great experience at Maurizio. The pizza was delicious, and our order arrived very quickly. We visited with our small dog, and the staff gave us a very warm welcome. They even brought a bowl of water for our dog, which was a thoughtful touch. Being so pet-friendly was a big plus for us. I’ve also added a photo of the receipt for anyone who would like to see the prices. Great food, fast service, and friendly staff we’d definitely visit again.”

“If you want the best Italian food in the East Midlands, this has got to be in the top 3, if not the top. The best Italian food I've had outside of Italy. Pizza, pasta, bruscceta, it's all incredible. Ignore the low reviews who clearly wouldn't know good food if it slapped them in the face. Expect a bit of chaos from this family run business, you'll keep coming back for it 😁 I've now lost count of how many times we've been.”

“I visit this restaurant quite often. The pizza is really good in here! The oven they use is strong enough to make delicious crust. I highly recommend pizza with mushrooms and meat. Every single one of them is really good. The price per pizza is acceptable for this quality of food.”

“I visited Maruzios today with a friend, and unfortunately it was one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I’ve had! When we arrived, we were told there would be a wait because the restaurant was busy, which we completely understood. We ordered a bruschetta to start, followed by a cannelloni and another pasta dish. After waiting around 45 minutes, a waiter came over to tell us that we would not be getting the bruschetta after all. This was extremely disappointing, especially as it was one of the dishes we had been looking forward to, and if we had knew earlier we would have left without ordering mains. Shortly afterwards, our mains arrived. After taking just one bite of my cannelloni, I found a hair in my food. I showed this to a waiter, who then called another waitress over to inspect it. At no point did anyone apologise. Instead, the dish was taken to the kitchen for the chefs to examine. What happened next was completely unacceptable. The two chefs were laughing and claimed that I had put the hair in the food myself. Being accused of something like that was both insulting and unprofessional. To make matters worse, I had already noticed that neither chef appeared to be following proper hygiene standards, as both had their hair loose while preparing food. Eventually, we were told that the cannelloni would simply be removed from the bill. I was not offered a replacement meal, an alternative dish, or even a proper explanation. I was left sitting there while my friend finished his meal, hungry and extremely disappointed! When the bill arrived, I explained to the waitress how dissatisfied I was with both the service and the handling of the situation. She told me that I should have asked for another option, but then added that the kitchen was closing anyway, so they wouldn’t have made anything else! This had never been communicated to me at the time, so I wasn’t even given the opportunity to make that choice. A supervisor then came over, and I explained everything again. Unfortunately, there was still no meaningful apology or gesture of goodwill. One of the chefs also came over and spoke only in Italian. Fortunately, my friend speaks Italian and was able to understand that she was simply explaining that no replacement had been offered because the kitchen was closing. Again, there was no apology or acknowledgement of how poorly the situation had been handled. Overall, I left feeling extremely disappointed. Mistakes can happen in any restaurant, but it’s how they’re dealt with that matters. The lack of communication, the poor hygiene standards I observed, the accusation that I had planted a hair in my own food, and the complete lack of empathy or goodwill made what should have been an enjoyable meal a thoroughly unpleasant experience. I won’t be returning and cannot recommend Maruzios based on my experience!”
