About Taste of China Restaurant
Taste of China Restaurant on High St in Leicester serves Hong Kong-style, cha chaan teng dishes rather than a standard Chinese takeaway menu. The kitchen's Sai Do Si, Hong Kong-style French toast, sits alongside salt and pepper pork chop and rice and four-treasure rice, with roast meats a regular order. Beef and tomato noodles and beef brisket curry in pot round out the savory side, while milk tea and bubble tea cover the drinks list. The entrance is step-free and wheelchair-accessible, making the dining room workable for visitors with mobility needs. Reservations are recommended for a table, and the restaurant also offers delivery for those eating off site. It runs Tuesday through Sunday and stays closed on Mondays. Cards are accepted alongside the delivery option.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers repeatedly single out the Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng offerings as the draw, with the salt and pepper pork chop and rice, four treasure rice, and Hong Kong-style French toast drawing particular praise, alongside a hidden-menu fried instant noodles with beef in black pepper sauce and a beef brisket curry in pot. The roast meat also brings one family back repeatedly, described as tasty and not greasy, and the milk tea and bubble tea earn mentions, though one reviewer felt the bubbles weren't the best they'd had in the UK. Several note quick, friendly service and generous portions, and one describes the soup as fresh and soul healing. A delivery customer praised the kitchen honouring a noodle substitution request, though the fries had gone soft in transit. The clearest complaint comes from a takeaway order where the ribs starter arrived dry, stale tasting, and smaller than expected, with the reviewer calling the portion sizes disappointing compared to other Chinese restaurants, even as they liked the black bean chicken and rice. Multiple reviewers say they plan to return to work through more of the menu.

“I visited with 2 friends today! The soup we had healed my soul 🥰🤭 So tasty and fresh! So glad I discovered it, I want to eat my way through the whole menu! The owner and waiter was friendly, and the food came out super fast! I will definitely be back, and can’t wait to take other friends as well! 🍜”

“Top No-Frills, OG cha chaan teng(茶餐廳) in east midlands!! Truly authentic Hongkong-style French toast(Sai Do Si 西多士)! Very satisfying. My recommendation recently will be a hidden menu: Fried instant noodles with beef in black pepper sauce(黑椒牛柳絲炒公仔麵), the smoky aroma(wok hei) elevates this dish to next level! Beef brisket curry in pot(咖哩牛腩煲) is another dish you should not miss if you are a beef lover. Don’t forget to order an iced lemon tea as well🥹”

“I do not believe this is the best name for the shop. I have just ordered a takeaway, and the portion sizes were not what I expected at all. With the Starter being ribs, i expected at least 3-4 but only got two, extremely dry ribs. Did not taste very authentic either, and were stale as if they were made the day before. The black bean chicken had a decent taste and the rice waas great but overall, portion sizes and ribs were very very disappointing, especially compared to other Chinese restaurants that I have visted.”
