Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is the main draw, with reviewers describing a roast chicken small plate, a beef, chicken and pork trio with plenty of veg and gravy, and one calling it the best pub Sunday dinner they have had. Close behind are the Easter lamb, a goats cheese and mushroom tart that a vegetarian reviewer praised as made from scratch, and burgers, including kangaroo with a chilli jam. Several mention friendly staff, an open fire, and a dog friendly garden with a large tree near the water, where one reviewer's dogs were welcomed warmly. Complaints are mixed. One Sunday roast diner found the food only warm, the dining area cold and the service slow. Another says the gluten free pizza arrived uncut and too hard to slice with a knife, with a very sweet tomato sauce and lukewarm meals. One reviewer calls the burgers the worst they have had, and says crackling, distorted music made conversation difficult. A stained bench seat and peeling wallpaper also get a mention, though that same reviewer found the staff lovely.

“Great food. Tried their kangaroo burgers for the first time. Yummy !!! And the chilli jam. That topped the burger was to die for.”

“The music was unbelievably loud and played through poor-quality speakers that were constantly crackling and distorting. Instead of music, it became an unpleasant wall of noise that made it difficult to have a conversation or enjoy the evening. The burgers were equally disappointing - easily the worst we've had.”

“Had a lovely Easter Lunch at the Gate hangs well yesterday! The food was beautiful, very fresh homemade and seasoned perfectly, my mum had the lamb which was cooked perfect and falling apart, I had the vegetarian goats cheese and mushroom tart, which was full of flavour and you could tell it was made from scratch, it can be hard as a vegetarian to find good pub food so this is a little gem! Lovely staff, it was a very relaxing cosy environment! We will be back soon!”

“Just been for Sunday lunch at The gate. I had a small plate - roast chicken and my husband had the larger trio roast , beef, chicken and pork. They were both absolutely beautiful! Plenty of veg and gravy. We didnt leave a morsel. Would fully recommend it. The service was fantastic as always and the fire was blazing. Thank you ladies!”

“Drank here many times and the beer is always good. We decided to book in for Sunday lunch today (01/03/26). Absolutely fantastic. As someone who has eaten a LOT of Sunday dinners, this one is right up there with them and easily the best I've had from a pub. I think the price you pay, for what you get is better than fair. The staff were lovely even after a long day serving big parties. Will be coming again without doubt!”
