About The Cow And Calf

The Cow And Calf is a pub on Hangingstone Rd in Ilkley, set on the site of one of Britain's earliest hydropathic hotels, where a Victorian well still stands in the grounds. The building is an old-style hotel and pub, with views across Wharfedale and Ilkley Moor from inside. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast with beef, pork or turkey, plus Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and gravy. Pork belly and salmon fishcakes also appear on the menu, and cask ales run alongside the food. Dogs are welcome. Parking is on the road outside, with room for a campervan. A loyalty program collects stamps and brings special offers.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the food, with the Sunday roast, sea bass, salmon fishcakes, pork belly and haddock fish cakes named by reviewers, and the sticky sharing platter recommended by one. Close behind are the views from the beer garden and inside, along with friendly, quick service from waitresses and staff. Reviewers also appreciate that dogs are welcome and that allergies were taken seriously. The recurring complaint concerns the Sunday roast and timing. One diner left still hungry after getting a single small Yorkshire pudding, a quartered potato and a small pot of gravy, while another found the extra mash and stuffing very small and the cauliflower cheese not very cheesy. Front of house also drew criticism when a forgotten starter meant mains arrived mid-starter and had to be taken back. Another table found the food slow to come out, though desserts arrived faster once it quietened. Several say they will return, and one diner noted that more gravy arrived when they asked.

“Food was of excellent quality, service was quick and efficient and atmosphere was calm and relaxed. We highly recommend the sticky sharing platter, pork belly and haddock fish cakes. The service from April was speedy and professional, definitely felt well looked after.”
  • Tracy Walker
“Gorgeous food, very tasty, sadly the portions are very small. Ordered a Sunday roast, and got 1 small Yorkshire pudding and the equivalent of one potato cut into small quarters and a small amount meat, and a very small container of gravy (I chose not to have the other veg). Still hungry after eating 😥”

“My allergies were taken seriously and Rosey was fantastic looking up what I could have. Service was amazing so was the food, I had beef and husband had the belly pork. We will definitely return. Plenty big siscevaling the road to park our campervan while we were there”
  • A Speed
“The location is amazing of course, backed up by the service, polite staff & food. Came here as we saw it in the background on the Leeds United new kit promo video. Plenty of seating.”
  • Craig Connell
“The food was delicious. Compliments to the chef. But front if house need some training. They forgot to order one of our starters, and brought the other to the table. I had to request that the other be taken back and served when both were ready, as opposed to them thinking for themselves. Then whilst eating the starters, they came out with the mains, which naturally had to be taken back. I don't imagine the chef was any happier than us. Especially with how beautifully presented, and delicious the food was.”
