About The Brownlee Arms

The Brownlee Arms is a gastropub in Leeds, on Long Row, with a back room that groups can hire for events and a conservatory section for larger parties. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast of beef or lamb with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy. The beef comes in slices, and the lamb comes with a square of stuffing. Steak and ale pie and fish pies sit on the menu, and starters include fried brie and a scotch egg. The bar serves cask ales and cocktails, while the team brings food to the table. The pub takes walk-ins.

Customer Review Summary

Praise centers on the steak and ale pie, described as full of meat, with the fish pies also called excellent. A June seafood platter of oysters, lobster, prawns and mussels earned top marks, and the private room and conservatory were praised for a baby shower and a funeral tea. After one poor roast, the drinks were taken off the bill.

“Just so disappointed. We’ve been going here for a while now, for food, drinks and just to relax. The last and final time we visited, we called in for a quiet drink and got served an hour before closing. As we sat with our drinks the guy at the bar who served us told us they were closing soon. We were confused because upon checking their opening hours they weren’t closing until 11.00 and it was 9.52pm. It got to 10.20pm and the same guy came up to us and asked us to leave. We asked why and they said because it was quiet, I’m not sure why if you know you’re quiet and you and the kitchen have prepared to close and leave early, why you would even serve us and then have the nerve to ask us to leave? I asked him this and he just fobbed us off. We paid for our drinks to enjoy them, not to be pressured to get lost because you want to go home early! If you had consideration and told us, we would have gone elsewhere to relax. We gulped our drinks down and as we were leaving, all the staff were sat looking impatient and you could tell they were just waiting for us to leave so they could go home, so unprofessional and we didn’t feel welcome. Won’t be back, which is a shame because we have always had a pleasant experience there apart from this rubbish treatment. Goodbye Brownlee Arms 😔”

“We went for the advertised seafood for June. The standard was really high for seafood in Leeds. I was disappointed that there wasn't more people there for a Thursday evening. Bluntly, Horsforth's loss. The seafood platter delivered, including - oysters, lobster, prawns, mussels. The seafood was excellent. So good to get decent food, minutes from my door. The seafood is only there for June, so move quickly if you want to try. The service was also excellent. Alert staff who were interested in making sure sure your experience was a good one.”

“It was a funeral tea. Very pleasant surroundings. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food well prepared and very tasty. I do not know how much a head was charged but the quality of the food was good. We were in the conservatory section with plenty of space.”

“We had a beef and also a lamb roast dinner. Pretty disappointing for both. The meats were overcooked and chewy, two roast potatoes each! (in fact closer to boiled potatoes then roast potatoes ) I mean who thinks two potatoes is enough? If you're going to short change me on potatoes then surely, three is the magic number. No complaints on the veg or the Yorkshire pudding (thank god!!). The lamb came with a fancy square of stuffing, but none with the beef (not sure if this was by design or a simple error). Over the course of a meal we interacted with five different serving staff who were all very polite and efficient however not once during our visit were we asked "if everything was ok", no it was not! My positive thinking lunch partner was not too keen on me voicing my opinion, but had you asked, I would have voiced it, but you didn't, so here I am typing a review. And so we left, hunger satisfied? yes, food enjoyed? Not really. Which is a shame as I've eaten here plenty of times before and never had reason for complaint. Surely the foundations of a roast dinner are a nicely cooked meat, plenty of lovely roast potatoes and of course a crispy Yorkshire pudding, at £19 a head am I asking too much?”
