About Humber Fish Co

Humber Fish Co is a fish and seafood restaurant in the marina on Humber St in Hull. The menu centres on shellfish and east coast landed fish. The Shipmate platter puts oysters, prawns, mussels, smoked salmon and trout, mackerel pâté, roll mop herring and boquerones on one order. Halibut and whole sea bream also appear among the fish dishes. Table service brings courses out in sequence, from starters to mains and desserts. A fish tank stands in the dining room with tables behind it, and rubber ducks and coastal ornaments make up the decor. The restaurant opens Wednesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tables are booked by phone.

Customer Review Summary

Seafood is the draw here, with reviewers repeatedly praising the fish itself: halibut cooked to perfection, a whole sea bream that was easy to bone, and grilled fish described as beautiful. Diners also single out the prawns, oysters and crab cakes, plus a sriracha monkish and a diablo dish. On a shared platter, one reviewer preferred the smoked and pickled fish, including mackerel pâté, roll mop herring and boquerones, over the mussels, which were just okay. Portions are described as generous, and the staff are called friendly, polite and knowledgeable about the menu. Several mention how busy the restaurant gets, and one reviewer suggests booking well in advance and wishes tables could be reserved online rather than only by phone. Complaints are few but specific. One diner found the grilled fish had almost no sauce, while another says flies around the table made the meal unpleasant. Another notes a long gap between courses on a busy Friday. One reviewer was glad to be allowed to bring a large dog in to lie under the table, and another liked being moved to a table beside the fish tank without any fuss.

“Fish was grilled beautifully but the sauce was non-existent! Felt a bit like false advertising. Lots of flies around which I know is difficult to control but it still made the dining experience quite unpleasant and stressful to be swatting away flies every few seconds”

“Really lovely fresh seafood. I could have eaten anything on the menu! I had the whole sea bream, was easy to pull the spine out. Cooked very well.”

“We travelled by train to Hull to watch Hull KR play the Brisbane Broncos. Wandering around town, it seemed like the council had decided to do every bit of roadwork, repair and building job all at once. That said, we thought it was really beautiful and had lots of charm and character. It was the equivalent of someone having all their teeth worked on, but who can’t help but smile at you. Beyond the scaffolding, road cones, closed pavements - there is a lot of nice places to see and fun to be had. It felt good to be back among Rugby League fans, going to watch “the greatest game of all”, an appetizer to the new NRL season about to start. For dinner, we decided we wanted seafood. We reached out to book, knowing that you can’t just show up with a 40kg German Shepherd and hope for the best. Humber Fish Co really looked after us and delivered on the honest seafood fare we were after as our pre-game dinner. We got a little pre-dinner game starter from the kitchen and it was a nice little morsel to get the show going. For orders, we opened with the Surf & Turf Spring Rolls. I’ll be honest, I sort of ordered them as a dare to myself. Years spent working in kitchens taught me that sometimes a “spring roll starter” can occasionally be something of an inventory management exercise, clearing a cool room of things that don’t make it to the table quite when it should have. Satay Mayo, they really could have gone either way. But they were good. Flavours were nice, no regrets in having given them a go. We decided to go with “The Shipmate” option on the platter menu, at £43 per head. There were two of us, and we thought this would give us the best chance to try a bit of everything. The oysters were fresh and I was glad to have them. There were prawns in multiple sizes: king, crevette, shell-on, tiny ones in a cocktail. Some better than others. The mussels were okay, but what I really enjoyed was the smoked and pickled fishes. The smoked salmon and trout were solid. Mackerel pâté, roll mop herring, boquerones. Salty, sharp and delicious. I was originally going to get some fresh seafood before opting for the platter, but enjoyed these elements immensely. The bread and dressings helped things along, and we got some fries and these were a welcome addition to the meal. For drinks we got a glass of Roebuck Classic Cuvée from West Sussex to start. This was a good English “fizz”, and worked well with the seafood. The Pinot Noir also worked great, the menu calls it a “Red for Fish”, and I agree with this assessment. It was a bit quiet, and I’m not sure if it is all the nearby construction or that we were there very early into the dinner service. We saw some of the other dishes coming out of the kitchen and they looked like simple and honest versions of what they are - and would tempt me on a return visit. We had a nice time here, and with the Broncos losing to Hull KR, our dinner was likely the high point of the night. Thanks team for having us and letting us bring our beautiful dog in to sit under the table, who spent the whole meal hoping we would drop a prawn.”

“Humber Fish is one of our top favourite restaurants. As a fish-lover and someone who was born in a fish-centric place, I can vouch that this place serves the best fish and seafood! It is in the vibrant Marina location and along the bustling street. We love to visit the restaurant more in the evenings and at sunset times, as the fairy lights along the street look extremely beautiful. The setting outside is as beautiful as the interiors of the restaurant. As soon as you will step inside, you will know that you are going to thoroughly enjoy the place. The ambience is beautiful. The table settings are really nice. I love the decor and all the fish/coastal ornaments all over the place! I keep admiring them every time we visit the restaurant. We always order starters, mains as well as the desserts! The portions of the mains are huge and the prices are worth it! The quality of fish/seafood is of very high standard. Each and every dish is well-prepared and simply sublime. Our favourites are the prawns, oysters, the crab cakes, the diablo, sriracha monkish, halibut and the seabass! The salmon too last time was absolutely delicious. Service here has always been great! We have always booked well in advance to avoid disappointment as they are always busy. Please note it is not a very big restaurant, so if you wish to eat here, especially during a weekend/busy times, please book in advance. One constructive feedback for the restaurant team would be to implement an online booking system. One can only book a table by calling the restaurant and they are not open everyday. It would be very helpful and convenient if there was a system, be it via Instagram chat or Facebook messenger, or even on the website itself of the restaurant, that allowed people to do online reservations. Humber Fish is definitely a MUST-VISIT restaurant!”
