About Lantern

On Whitefriargate in Hull, Lantern is a Greek restaurant also covering continental dishes, fish, and steaks, run by two sisters who took over the business from their father. The room keeps old-style decor, with photos of Whitefriargate displayed in the seating area. Guests are first shown to a bar and sofa area to order drinks and look over the menu before being taken to their table, and coats are hung up on arrival. The kitchen's regulars include garlic mushrooms and calamari to start, with sirloin, porterhouse, and fillet steak alongside stroganoff among the mains, and sides of fries and onion rings served in portions meant for sharing. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Saturday and stays closed Mondays and Sundays. Reservations are recommended, as time slots are limited. The entrance itself is not well signposted along the street.

Customer Review Summary

Steak draws the most consistent praise, with the porterhouse and sirloin repeatedly described as cooked to perfection, and the stroganoff singled out by several diners as exceptional. Close behind, the garlic mushrooms come up again and again as a starter worth ordering, alongside calamari and garlic bread, and one birthday diner highlights the halibut. Reviewers describe generous, big portions on sides like fries, onion rings and cauliflower cheese, often too large to leave room for the dessert selection. The setting is repeatedly likened to stepping back in time, with several noting the restaurant has been run by the same family, including two sisters, for decades, and old photos of Whitefriargate decorating the bar area where guests wait with drinks before being seated. Service is called attentive and personal throughout. Reviewers note the entrance is easy to miss and recommend booking ahead given limited slots, and one reviewer mentions feeling cold during their meal despite an otherwise strong experience. Diners commonly leave full and already planning their next order.

“From the moment we walked in, the staff treated us like we were the family, polite, welcoming, and so professional they made everything feel effortless. The starters were a whole experience on their own: fresh, tasty, and so good we had to slow ourselves down before we accidentally finished them in two bites. Then came the steak… cooked to absolute perfection 👌. Juicy, tender, and honestly so good I considered guarding my daughter plate like a dragon with treasure. And the stroganoff? I don’t even have the words. It was on another level , the kind of dish that makes you stop mid-conversation just to appreciate what's happening in your mouth. Truly the best in the world. Left the restaurant full, happy, and we already planning what to order next time. Highly recommend! Thank you ☺️”

“Here is a real gem in Hull. family owned restaurant. The two sisters have been running the restaurant since their father started the restaurant. It is the best place to eat in Hull by far. It is very difficult to find in the middle of Hull, but what an experience, it is like moving back in time. The food, the atmosphere and the service are in a class of their own. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a unique experience on all parameters. thank you to everyone at Lanterne ❤️”

“I am really reluctant to write this review as this restaurant is a hidden gem. It was recommended to us by friends and when I called to book there was limited time slots available, I definitely recommend booking early to get a table. When we arrived we were a little concerned that we were in the right place, as there way in isn't well signposted but you can't get really lost. Walking into The Lantern really is like stepping into the past, we were seated in the bar area and someone took our drinks order and we were given a menu to peruse before our drinks arrived and we were asked if we were ready to order. We were left to enjoy our drinks in the bar area whilst our order was prepared. All around this seating area are photos of Whitefriargate throughout the years which is really interesting, especially seeing the old shops and what it was like before it became pedestrianised. When our food was ready we were shown to our table. We ordered a garlic bread starter to share and for our main course we ordered a sirloin steak and a porterhouse steak with fries, onion rings and cauliflower cheese as sides. We also ordered the garlic mushroom starter to come with our main course. The food was some of the most delicious food that I have eaten in a very long time. The steaks were cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths. The garlic mushrooms were the best I have ever tasted, all of the food was amazing. We were given the tip of sharing the sides because they are quite big portions and I am glad we did share because we couldn't eat dessert. These photos don't do the food the justice it deserves. The service at The Lantern was fabulous, the staff are so friendly, kind, patient and helpful. They really made the evening for us. My only criticism of The Lantern would be that we were cold . Our booking was for 6.30pm and I can imagine that as there is more people in the restaurant it will warm up, but take a jumper just in case. It certainly won't put us off coming again.”
