About Hearth Restaurant

Hearth Restaurant is a restaurant in Hull's old town, set in Trinity Square on King St, opposite the Minster. The dining area is upstairs, split across a couple of rooms, above a bakery, and the kitchen cooks over coals and in a bespoke smoker. Dishes come as small plates and larger plates meant for sharing, with sourdough and focaccia brought to the table. Weekday lunch is a four course menu that starts with canapés, and a tasting menu is offered. Sundays bring a shared roast of pork, beef and chicken with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese. Downstairs, a bar pours cocktails, wine and draft beer, and guests have a drink there before being seated. The menu includes fried chicken thighs, among them a buttermilk version and an Asian-style one.

Customer Review Summary

Multi-course menus draw the most praise. Reviewers call the tasting menu outstanding, delicious and plentiful, and one describes a four course lunch that opens with canapés and runs through Shetland mussels to duck confit that was tender and not too salty or greasy. The Sunday roast comes close behind: a shared spread of pork with fantastic crackling, beef, chicken, huge Yorkies and unexpected buttermilk fried chicken thighs. Another Sunday lunch diner praises crispy honey chicken and oak smoked lamb with a crispy belly side. The sourdough and focaccia from the bakery downstairs earn repeated mention, and one diner was blown away by a burger. Staff are consistently described as friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and one reviewer mentions cocktails and lovely wine. One couple held their wedding reception here and received a feasting menu, plate after plate. One Sunday party was so full that they bagged up leftovers to take home and never touched the focaccia they had set aside.

“Simply outstanding. We dined at Hearth twice, and knew immediately that we wanted to eat here for our Wedding Reception. Steve and the team made us comfortable and at ease on our big day, and organised everything perfectly. The space was decorated beautifully, and some thoughtful personalised touches were added. The feasting menu which we opted for was delicious - plate after plate of the most delicious food we have found in Hull & East Yorkshire. Thank you so much to Hearth, we will definitely see you again soon!”

“Visited for the first time with 3 friends for Sunday lunch, and wow ! This place was fabulous. From its rustic interior, the food was outstanding. The crispy honey chicken to start was a taste sensation, followed by the Oak Smoked Lamb and all the trimmings was utterly mouth watering ; the crispy Lamb belly side was amazing! The brown sugar tart for desert was delicious 😋 Highly recommended for a relaxed, delicious Sunday Lunch!”

“We went for lunch on a weekday, first time here and me and the wife were both really impressed with this place. We got the four course lunch menu, which starts with canapés; a plate each of nice little fried bites, with an attractive garnish. I can't even remember everything that was on there but it was all delicious and beautifully presented. For my starter, I had Shetland Mussels in a creamy sauce; the mussels were tender and flavourful but not too 'fishy'; obviously fresh, quality ingredients. The missus had some Asian-style fried chicken. I tried a bit. It was crispy and tender, the sauce was rich and a good balance of sweet and spicy, it wasn't over-seasoned. With that came a plate of sourdough bread slices and some delicious focaccia with a pat of good, salty butter. The bread was truly excellent, they have a bakery downstairs so it was freshly made. For the main course we both had the duck confit, with walnuts and new potatoes with a fresh herb garnish and creamy tomato on the side. The duck was really tender and not too salty or greasy the way confit can be sometimes. The potatoes were excellent, cooked nice and soft and the flavours just balanced nicely. Dessert was some chocolate confections from the bakery downstairs. Crafted in exquisite detail. All-in-all, the food was superb, the best we have had for a long while. The chefs are obviously very talented and clearly put a lot of effort into the menu. Nothing was an afterthought. The portions were very reasonable too; after four courses, I felt full but not over-stuffed. Our waiter was really friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable about the menu. We didn't have wine with this meal but the wine list looked good and they have decent draft beer. The décor is understated but tasteful. It is not a big space, you can see the kitchen, but it was comfortable. We had an excellent experience. It was pricy but totally worth it. We will definitely be back.”
