About The Winterburn

Up a steep road from Halifax, The Winterburn is a gastropub at 1-2 Winterburn Ln with views over the valley. Dogs are welcome in the bar area, and a doggy dinner is on offer, so visitors can bring their pets along while they eat. The pub has been under new ownership since October 2024, and the kitchen cooks home-style food. Sunday brings a three-course lunch built around a roast with gravy and the trimmings. The vegan version swaps in a nut roast and leaves out the Yorkshire pudding. Sticky toffee pudding is among the desserts. Beer is served on draught, and the ale comes in an old-fashioned pint mug. The pub is walk-in. Vegetarian options sit alongside a gluten-free burger.

Customer Review Summary

The Sunday roast draws the most praise at The Winterburn, with reviewers describing tender beef, all the proper trimmings and tasty gravy. A vegan reviewer appreciated a nut roast and perfectly cooked veg adapted from the roast, with no Yorkshire pudding, followed by a lovely crumble. Close behind are the starters and puddings, including a smooth, flavourful pâté and a rich, gooey sticky toffee pudding. Another reviewer notes the gluten free burger. Beer also earns mentions, with a decent selection on draught and ale served in an old fashioned pint mug. Views over the valley come up repeatedly, and several describe the staff as friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The one caveat is practical: a reviewer found the roads a bit steep either way in, though still worth the trip. One reviewer suggests booking in advance by messenger or phone, and another was first told there were no spaces, then had a booking confirmed after calling back minutes later. Dog owners report being welcomed in the bar area, where two dogs were served a doggy dinner.

“A lovely pub. Very unassuming from outside, but lovely inside. The guy behind the bar was super nice and helpful. Great vegetarian options, dog and child friendly. Beer and food great. Beautiful views... A bit steep either way in on the roads, but worth the trip.”

“A lovely, small rural pub with great views. The food menu is extensive and what we had - from the Sunday Roast menu - was beautifully cooked and presented. Service was attentive, but not intrusive and the prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity. We walked up from Halifax and would recommend that for the views.”
