Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise freshly cooked food, naming fish and chips, mozzarella sticks, a lobster and crayfish tails cocktail, sea bass and a Sunday roast. Close behind is friendly, attentive staff, with several describing prompt service and a warm, welcoming pub. Reviewers also single out the cask ales and beer selection, the beautiful art deco restaurant upstairs, and the terrace. A few call the food reasonably priced or good value. The one critical account, from a night out, describes a long wait at the bar while people who had just walked up were served first, staff who seemed miserable, a bartender eating a burger in view of customers, and a late evening that felt flat once the pub emptied. That reviewer also watched a customer discover an apparently large overcharge for drinks and get taken to a back room to sort it out, though the toilets were clean. Elsewhere, requests were met: fish and chips came with salad instead of chips, and sea bass arrived piping hot without the pine nuts.

“I visited Old Gate Bar & Restaurant yesterday during a day trip to Hebden Bridge with my family, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my visit. From the moment we arrived, the welcome was outstanding. The staff were professional, friendly and attentive throughout our visit. These guys clearly know what they are doing when it comes to customer service. What initially caught my attention was the atmosphere. As I was walking around the village looking for somewhere to have lunch, Old Gate looked exactly like the classic British pub experience I was hoping to find. It felt warm, welcoming and very inviting. The place was spotless, and even from outside you could sense the good atmosphere and positive vibe inside. Thanks to the beautiful weather, we chose to sit on the terrace, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Drinks arrived quickly, and service remained efficient without ever feeling rushed. For lunch, I ordered the classic Fish and Chips. Due to my diet, I asked to replace the chips with a salad, and the staff were more than happy to accommodate my request. The fish was excellent, freshly cooked and full of flavour. We also ordered the Mozzarella Sticks, which were absolutely delicious and highly recommended. The prices were very reasonable for both the quality of the food and the level of service provided. Good food and good service are worth paying for, and this place delivers both. If you're visiting Hebden Bridge and want to experience a proper British pub atmosphere with excellent food, friendly staff and a welcoming environment, I can highly recommend Old Gate Bar & Restaurant. It's a place I would happily return to.”

“Visited The Old Gate in Hebden Bridge recently as part of my birthday night out. It’s definitely a good place to start the evening — lively atmosphere, busy when we arrived, and a decent buzz about the place. We only intended to stop for one drink but ended up staying a bit longer after bumping into friends. Unfortunately, the service let it down for us. We were stood waiting at the bar for quite a while while staff appeared to serve people who had just walked up. One young lady behind the bar was giving some strange looks, and the gentleman who eventually served us looked quite scruffy and later was sat eating a burger in customer view, which just didn’t come across very professionally. After enjoying the rest of our night around Hebden Bridge, we returned to The Old Gate around 10:30 expecting it to still be lively, but it had pretty much emptied out and the atmosphere felt flat. Staff still seemed quite miserable, which didn’t really make us feel welcome. One thing that was particularly concerning was seeing a customer discover they’d apparently been overcharged by more than £1,000 for drinks. The poor guy was understandably really distressed and taken into a back room to sort it out. Mistakes happen, but seeing something like that unfold in front of customers doesn’t inspire confidence. On the positive side, the toilets were clean and the pub itself is decent enough decor-wise. I haven’t tried the food, so can’t comment on that. Overall, I’d probably return as a place to start a night out, but I personally wouldn’t head back there later in the evening again.”

“OK so 1st I was drawn in by the excellent choice of Cask ales which I found to be on top form. I had a little look at the food menu and decided to come back the next night. I'm a bit of a fish fan so decided on the lobster & crayfish tails cocktail. Ive had many a seafood cocktail in my time THIS one I can honestly say was the best I've ever eaten . For the main I chose the seabas requested without the pine nuts as they don't agree with me. The meal arrived as ordered and pipping hot. Excellent service throughout. I only wish I had toom for a desert. I shall definitely be back here.”
