About Royâ
Royâ is a Middle Eastern restaurant and mazzeh bar at 59 Elmbank St in Glasgow city centre. The menu draws on Persian and Turkish influences, with Iranian and Arabic dishes served as sharing plates for groups, and a private dining room gives larger parties a space of their own. The Middle Eastern afternoon tea replaces finger sandwiches with za'atar chicken tacos and lamb shawarma hummus bites, then moves on to baklava, with tea, coffee and a cocktail included. A roast offers a choice of chicken, lamb or cauliflower with four sides and three dips, and a pre-theatre menu is aimed at shows at the King's. The bar pours cocktails, spritz and wine alongside the food. Inside, a Persian rug sits at the entrance and traditional Middle Eastern music plays.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the meatball starter, called super tasty and good for dipping leftover bread into the sauce. Close behind are the harissa prawns, Turkish cigars and short rib taco, with the dipping platter named as a good opening. Mains draw praise for the chicken tawook, the mixed grill and the minced lamb lahmajun, while others highlight the afternoon tea with za'atar chicken tacos and baklava, and a lamb Sunday roast. Portions are called generous and service quick and friendly. Complaints centre on cost: some find prices on the higher end, one notes hummus comes without bread, which is ordered separately, and another found the lamb chops small for a main. A few found the falafel and prawns dry, and one disliked the pomegranate juice. One reviewer who could not get a table on the pre-theatre menu suggests booking in advance. One couple marking an anniversary were given free prosecco.

“The watermelon juice and prawn starter were to die for. He really enjoyed his meatball starter but neither of us liked the pomegranate juice. I actually preferred my brother's main course to my own. The chicken was just so flavourful & juicy whilst being not too spicy. Some things are quite spicy so be aware of that if you don't like it, I do usually but my tolerance has decreased since I've moved. We'd definitely go back and it's especially handy if you're going to a show at the kings as they guarantee to get you out in time. Very popular so next time I'd book in advance, tried to go back but couldn't get a table on the pre-theatre menu so we went to mini grill which is also great, see my other review.”

“We’ve been meaning to go to Roya for ages and always forgot to book. We were more organised tonight and so glad we finally got to go. There is a lovely relaxed atmosphere and our waiter, Aaron, could not have been more friendly, professional or helpful. I’m allergic to dairy and gluten and he was happy to help. They also have a comprehensive allergy menu online and also a gluten free menu which you can look at. The food was delicious as were the mocktails. I would say the prices are absolutely fair for the quality and standard of the food. The food was served quickly but tasted fresh and not in any way rushed. I was pleasantly surprised to find a desert that I could have despite my gluten and dairy allergy - absolute bonus. This was a meal out for my husband and I and we really enjoyed it. We do have a son with a nut and sesame allergy and i probably wouldn’t take him however I think if someone did have those allergies they would be accommodating. It’s just worth knowing that quite a few dishes have nuts and sesame. It is generally to be expected with this food. Amazing evening and we can’t wait to come back. We’re 3 hours away and it’s worth it despite the long drive!”

“The overall dining at Royâ was excellent! We really enjoyed the calm atmosphere and relaxed dining experience. The food was seasoned to perfection and the portions were generous. The waiters were friendly and excellent at recommending menu items as we have never dined here before. Looking forward to my next visit!”

“Roya is a beautifully designed restaurant and, in my opinion, has some of the best lighting and interior décor of any restaurant I have visited in Glasgow. The atmosphere is elegant and welcoming, making it a great place to enjoy a meal. The menu offers a lovely combination of traditional Iranian and Arabic cuisine. If you are visiting for the first time, I would definitely recommend the kabab platter, which allows you to try different varieties of kababs cooked in the traditional Iranian style. It is a great way to experience the flavours of Persian cuisine. The staff were helpful and happy to explain the dishes, which is particularly useful if you are unfamiliar with some of the menu options. The only downside is that the prices are towards the higher end, but the beautiful setting and quality of the dining experience make it worth considering. Overall, Roya is definitely one of my top recommendations for Persian food in Glasgow and could well be the best Persian restaurant in the city. I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Iranian flavours in a stylish setting.”

“Roya Iranian restaurant is a lovely place with beautiful decor. We ordered koobideh kebab, meat with dough (lahm bi ajeen), grilled shrimp, grilled kebab, and saffron rice. There was also a delicious spicy sauce. The food was very tasty, and the service was fast. Highly recommended!”
