About Kong

Kong is a cocktail bar on Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow, with a rooftop bar and terrace that runs on table service, so drinks come to the table rather than being ordered at the bar. The rooftop has a covered terrace area with heaters and several TVs, and an indoor roof area sits alongside it. The cocktail list includes pornstar martinis and a French martini, with a cocktail offer running on selected drinks. A weekend 3am club licence means the bar serves late-night on weekends. Entry is walk-in, and a door team staffs the entrance. Mojitos and Guinness are also served at the tables.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often describe the security staff at the door, with several recounting bouncers who were aggressive. One reviewer says a booked party was barked at and nearly charged entry, another says four women were refused entry and told "go back to your country" by a security manager, and a solo business traveller was also turned away at the door. Table service draws complaints too: a booked rooftop table was given up for indoor seating, a bottle of wine was ordered at a table that turned out to be reserved, and one reviewer reports a mojito served without mint or lemon after it was charged. Others mention long waits for drinks and no draught beer left at lunchtime on a Sunday. Praise centres on the rooftop terrace, where reviewers describe heaters keeping it warm in the rain, a great vibe, and cocktail offers such as pornstar martinis. Some find the bar staff and hostess friendly, and one says the chicken burger and loaded fries were good. One reviewer who booked says the hostess finally brought their waiting drinks after about half an hour.

“I booked 2 tables here for my birthday. As a venue this place is pretty decent, the rooftop bar is definitely a must in the summer. The biggest let down, however, is the security that make the entire experience almost worthless. Having worked in nightlife and hospitality for over 5 years, I have worked with stewards that actually care about the nature of their job, who work with integrity, care and efficiency. The same cannot be said for the stewards here who must have some sort of power and superiority complexes in the way they treat the paying customers. In particular, the steward at the top of the stairs on the night we were out was absolutely vile in the way he barked orders at me when I was trying to tell him I had a booking. He tried to make us pay £10 entry (which was absolutely ridiculous considering we had already paid a £200 deposit) and when he'd finally stopped yelling and understood I had a booking (mind you, a grown, middle aged man talking to a 22 year old girl half his size) he told us to go in. Honestly I think that guy just liked the sound of his own voice. When entering the venue, my friends and I tried to get a bottle of wine using the deposit I had paid for, the bar staff asked us to go to reception to verify that it was us who made the booking which made sense. That same bouncer barked at us again and told us to go back to the bar. When I told him that the bar staff asked us to go to reception, he yelled even more for us to go back to the bar. At this point I was sick of the sight and sound of him so went back to the bar staff and told them of what he said and even the bar staff admitted their security is both useless and rude but unfortunately they couldnt do anything about it and therefore we couldnt get served. After maybe 30 mins of back and forth, the hostess brought us the drinks we had been waiting for. Later in the night, some members of our party were knocked back after simply going outside for a cigarette. I will say the bar staff and hostess were absolutely fabulous in looking after us that night but it was severely dampened by the so-called "security". I wouldn't recommend booking here for any special occassion unless you want to be screamed at, knocked back for no reason and experience absolutely 0 human decency from the stewards.”

“Visited Kong on around midday Sunday, very quiet and mainly peaceful vibes. Started to pick up after 4pm I'd say. I enjoyed the greenery and aesthetic. The terrace has a cover for bad weather, multiple tv's and heaters outside. However it was rather warm despite the rain so we had asked for them to be turned off. Service was okay, not to much checking up on us but our table was cleared a few times from empty drinks and such. Staff were polite, thankfully with no rudness as mentioned in the other reviews. There was no one waiting at the entrance to be seated however I spotted my colleagues so I wasn't too fussed. Food was mediocre, but on the better side from the things we tried. The chicken burger and fries were good however the my could definitely benefit from a wider variety on the food menu. The loaded fries are massive, definitely more of a whole meal size opposed to a small side unless sharing. Drinks were reasonably priced and thankfully not diluted as some places do when you order a few. All in all, spent £50 getting the chicken burger and chips, 1 French Martini (£11.50) and 3 pornstar Martini's (£7.50 offer).”

“Decided to go for a few drinks on the rooftop bar and wow it was beautiful...my wife and I Decided to site outside and even though it was raining on and off the heaters outside definitely make it a nice warm area to sit and have a drink...we got 2 drinks each but I did see other people with food and it looked very very nice...thats why I cant give any stars for food.”

“Sadly, I was really disappointed with the place. We had visited it together with my partner on Tuesday and ordered a cocktail and a Guiness for our table. My booking was for food and cocktails but there was no food menu, so we have decided to skip it, especially after we got out cocktails. So what you see on the picture is *apparently* a Mojito. £11.50 for a Mojito with no mint and no lemon, as the guy had placed in front of us saying that “oh i forgot to tell you but we dont have any mint or lemon left”. Would have been nice to know this *before* he had charged us for basically watered down alcohol with a dash of lemonade. Deeply disappointed”

“Arrived on Sunday at lunch time with no booking but thought we’d chance the roof top terrace. The first girl we spoke to was lovely and said theres no seats but we can stand at the bar or grab a table when one becomes free. We walked up and met a 2nd girl at the roof top who said there was standing at the bar but no chance of a table and basically said see you later. We were happy to stand at the bar but was made to feel like we had no choice but to leave. We then went to the outdoor seating on the street and that was even worse. 1 girl (trying her best) to manage around 15+ tables. Only a handful of tables actually had drinks and some tables said they had been waiting over 30mins for their drinks. We ordered and had been waiting only 10 and got told they had no draught beer left which on a sunday at 1pm is crazy! We just left and went elsewhere. If i’d seen the amount of bad reviews before I went, I probably wouldn’t have gone.”
