About The Bat & Ball Freehouse
The Bat & Ball Freehouse is a freehouse pub in Farnham, on Bat and Ball Ln. The kitchen serves a pie of the day, with a mushroom ale pie among the choices, and the pie pairs naturally with the real ales on the bar. The menu also includes a coconut curry and roast dinners with a vegetarian option, and it changes with the seasons, with the specifics shifting every few months. Behind the bar, a selection of real ales is joined by further beers on a blackboard, and ciders are poured as well. Chocolate brownies cover dessert.

Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast is what most reviewers raise first, and opinions split. Some call the pork roast generous and the vegetarian option really good, while another found the beef tough and chewy, with small portions and one very large, underdone parsnip that the manager replaced with smaller, better cooked ones. Close behind are the real ales and a perfect pint of Guinness, plus the mushroom ale pie, pie of the day and coconut curry. One reviewer praises the chocolate brownies. Reviewers describe a roaring open fire inside, a redone garden with a covered patio, and a well secured kids' playground, and dog walkers are welcomed with a jar of treats on the bar. A few say the menu wording is hard to decipher, and one dislikes the small wooden boards and the loss of traditional mayonnaise in favour of a vegan one. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and unrushed, and one diner who flagged the parsnip had it swapped without fuss.

“Calm quiet Tuesday, atmosphere with extremely polite, friendly and reassuring customer service. Mushroom ale pie chips and veg meal was delicious and extremely good value for money. We will be back 100%”

“You’ve got to love the Bat and Ball pub – and I do – but I have to admit I’ve always had an on-and-off relationship with the food. Half the time I’m not entirely sure what the menu is trying to tell me because of the language used to describe the dishes. That doesn’t mean the food isn’t lovely once you’ve deciphered it! Other times, though, I find it a bit overcomplicated, with so many additions that, in my opinion, they actually detract from the dish rather than enhance it. I also have a bit of a thing about eating from a small wooden board. Once you add ketchup and mayonnaise, there’s no room left for the food, so I usually end up asking for a proper plate. Then there was the vegan mayonnaise the other night. Personally, I much prefer traditional mayonnaise, but they no longer stock it. I’m all in favour of catering for different dietary preferences, but not when it means standard options disappear altogether. It feels as though the focus on accommodating one preference has inadvertently reduced choice for everyone else. To me, real inclusivity is about offering both, so customers can choose what suits them. All hail “full fat” mayo!”

“My mum and I come from the Netherlands and are on our way to Cornwall. We were just passing through town for the night but decided to have a drink at The Bat & Ball Freehouse… which turned out to be a very good decision! First thing we noticed was the large beer garden which looked very nice and it has a playground too. There’s picnic tables under a roof that will offer shelter when it rains. Inside, the pub is so cosy and has a nice homely feel to it. The fun wooden chairs, benches and pictures on the wall added a nice charm. The staff was so kind and helpful and didn’t rush you at all even though there were more customers waiting at the time that we ordered. A variety of drinks on the menu and, although we didn’t get a bite to eat, we saw many tables enjoying a nice meal. We got some crisps and peanuts and there were other bar bites to choose from. Prices are very reasonable. We had a really good time and it was such a good start to our holiday. If you are in the area, you must pop by! :)”

“Edit: under new management, refreshed garden/patio area. A great pub all around. A good selection of beers and ciders (check blackboard for the extra ones they have round the back!) A great seasonally changing menu, mostly stays the same, but the specifics change every 3 months or so. Occasionally one season will be a bit of a miss though. Highly recommend their chocolate brownies, burgers are good, but not as good as before COVID. The inside is reasonably large, with a fireplace etc for those cold days. There is a largeish covered outside area as well as a smallish beer garden with kids play area. They also host a few charity beer festivals through the year with live music.”
