About Project Coffee

On Bruntsfield Place, Project Coffee serves as a coffee shop, breakfast restaurant, and tea room with no reservations, just walk in and find a table. The kitchen turns out breakfast, brunch, and lunch plates, including egg sandwiches, bacon rolls, and sourdough and eggs, with avocado toast also on offer. Homemade fruit scones are baked on site alongside the coffee and fresh juice. The entrance is step-free for visitors with mobility needs, and outdoor seating gives another option for those who prefer to eat outside. High chairs are available for families with young children, and dogs are welcome at the tables. It opens daily, and the format stays informal throughout, with customers ordering at the counter rather than being seated by staff.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the coffee, calling it very good, and the homemade scones come close behind, with one reviewer praising them as baked on site with a decent amount of fruit. The sourdough and eggs combo, fresh juice and avocado toast also earn mentions, and staff are described as friendly and busy. The recurring complaint is table and food handling. Several reviewers say tables were cleared but not wiped, or that staff were slow to clear them, and one found crumbs left behind. Others report lukewarm plates and cold crockery that cooled the tea, an egg sandwich with dry bread and cold butter and cheese, and a bacon roll with only two small bits of bacon. Two reviewers describe the man at the till as grumpy or bad-tempered with staff and customers. One notes the tables are close together and the music loud at 9am. One reviewer, a local for years, says service is always fast, and another says the butter with the scone arrived hard, straight from the fridge.

“We visited for breakfast on a Saturday and struggled to get a seat, we were lucky someone was leaving so sat down. Staff didn’t come and clear the table for us and we sat there for a while trying to get staffs attention to clear the table, they cleaned another table before ours, it didn’t seem as efficient. Cafe atmosphere was great and buzzing. I had a bacon roll and the roll was expensive for only 2 small bits of bacon. Juice was nice!”

“Went for a few coffees. Coffees were really good. did not try any of the various pastries on display. the angry spanish man behind the bar seems to have a bad temper with customers and his colleagues. Not nice to overhear in an otherwise lovely cafe.”
  • Nica BD
“Coffee is very good and the scones are top! Recommend juiced and the sourdough and eggs combo are good Typical Bruntsfield crowd with students and Merchiston people - all good. The bloke at the till is very grumpy with staff and customers. He needs a holiday or maybe a new job?”
  • Andrew Jackson
“Been coming here for years as a local of the area. Coffee is top-notch, with a good selection of food for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Service is always fast. Recommended especially for great coffee in Edinburgh.”
  • Kasia Lichtarska
“Over the years, it's been the spot I come back to over and over. Food is delicious. My favourite is the avocado toast. Weirdly I do not like the coffee here as much as other patrons, so I opt for the fresh juice”
