Customer Review Summary
Haggis comes up most, with the haggis fritters called delicious by two diners and a haggis and potato pie described as well seasoned. Close behind are the steak pies, one steak and ale pie with tender steak and rich beef gravy, another with Merlot gravy. Reviewers also name fish and chips with lots of green peas, mac and cheese, wild boar sausages with mash, a Korean chicken burger, and a soup that tasted homemade, served with bread. A good list of whiskies and a cozy, authentic interior get repeated mentions, along with friendly, welcoming staff. The recurring trade-off is space. The pub is small and fills up, and one reviewer found service a bit slow with only one waiter covering the pub area, though it did not ruin the visit. A few suggest making reservations, and one warns that walk-ins may have to look elsewhere. One diner describes a lone server who hustled and sold the table on the sticky toffee.

“In Edinburgh for fringe and was able to get a table for 2. Table service was good, made clear on the options. The Merlot was good. Decided on the haggis and potato pie, steak n ale pie. Both were excellent, the veggies of carrots and cabbage soft and flavoursome. The potato pie was well seasoned and cooked. The steak n ale pie was epic, the steak was soft and tender and the added beef gravy was fantastic, almost a rich beef bullion. The chef needs to be protected at all costs. Great food, drink and service. Highly recommend.”

“Very small space, make reservations! Food was outstanding! James was the only server and hustled. He sold us on the sticky toffee, which was a Scottish fav, even if not Scottish native.”

“Everything a pub should be to be perfect: excellent vibes, superior service, good drinks, delicious food, and ... historic!! We went in for a drink and a light bite. Everything that happened while we were there made for an excellent experience. You can go to any pub, but not all pubs (especially ones in the higher tourist areas) are going to have such friendly, welcoming, wonderful people who work there. The young woman (American) is just so kind and helpful. The barman was equally accommodating. The drinks were excellent. The soup was amazing, as was the bread that came with it. The soup really did taste homemade. Yummmmmm!!! What more is there to say? Just go there!! But time it well, because it's not a huge place and it fills up.”

“This is a cozy pub. Real authentic style and decor. One half of the pub is for walk-in and the other for reservations. The menu offers an adequate amount of courses and drinks. They serve wine, beer, cocktails and whiskeys. The food we got tasted awesome. A fun thing is that the kitchen is really small - but they sure do kick out a lot of food - tasty and well prepared made. Only one waiter was working the pub area - so it was a bit slow. But it did not ruin our visit. Definitely a place to visit when nearby.”

“Had a reservation on a Sunday night at 6pm and had a great waiter, he did a great job, his name slips my mind. I ordered a Korean chicken burger and it was delicious, best meal I've had so far in Edinburgh. Make reservations! If you dont you may have to find somewhere else if nothing is open in the bar!”
