About Brewhemia

Brewhemia is a live music bar and restaurant at 1A Market St in Edinburgh, pouring tank fresh beer while bands play on a raised stage above the bar. The venue calls itself a beer palace, and music carries throughout the building, so the whole room shares the show. The kitchen runs from appetizers and bar bites, including fried pickles, to mains such as schnitzel, with sticky toffee pudding for dessert. A boozy brunch option sits alongside the regular menu for those who want a drink with their meal. Gluten-free options are available, and the staff check for cross-contamination when preparing them. The drinks list covers beer, cocktails, wine and coffee, so a table can mix pints with spritzes or espresso. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Live music and a lively atmosphere draw the most mentions. Reviewers describe a band on the raised stage above the bar, drag performers dancing on tables, and a mood that stays casual and relaxed. Food comes close behind: schnitzel, creamy mac and cheese, fried pickles, bangers, the Haus Benny at breakfast, and a sticky toffee pudding described as perfectly balanced. Among drinks, one diner calls the espresso martini one of the best they have had, and the Sarti Rosa Spritz and Innes & Gunn are recommended by a group. The main complaint is slow table service. One diner with a reservation waited a long stretch for a drink order and again for a food order, found the Wurst appetizer sold out, and rated the visit poorly despite praising the food. Another found a Paloma tasted bad. Elsewhere staff are called friendly and attentive, and one server double checked the gluten free options for a celiac guest.

“Our group came in on a Thursday afternoon, had a couple of the bar bites (fried pickles, bangers, and hummus plate) and they were delicious! The drinks were fantastic (recommended from our group are the Innes & Gunn (OG), and the Sarti Rosa Spritz)! We decided to swing back by after dinner later the same night, and were treated to a live band performing on their raised stage above the bar! The service was top notch and the vibes are electric, we already can’t wait to come back again.”

“Had a reservation for 1700. Arrived, was seated promptly by the hostess, and waited at our table for 20 minutes before someone came and asked what we wanted to drink. Her name was Fiona according to the receipt, she never introduced herself - a red headed young woman with a long ponytail. She came back after taking our drink order and dropped them off before sprinting off somewhere else without a word or eye contact. Took another 15 minutes before she came back asking if we wanted to eat. I tried to order the Wurst appetizer, which they were out of (which is fine). She seemed irritated, making the comment that the hostess should have told us. The hostess may have very well told us, she did point a few things out, but having been over 35 minutes since I was told what wasn't available, I had plenty of time to be distracted by other things between the time I had been seated and the time I was ordering, so no fault to the hostess - she was great. The young man who delivered the appetizer I ordered (Pretzel) was very courteous and asked if there was anything else he could get for us at the moment. He was also the one who brought our main entrés and came by the rest of our experience after to check on quality and to replenish drinks. Food arrived in a fair amount of time after placing the order, roughly 20 minutes. We ordered the sticky toffee pudding for afters. It was perfect. Creamy vanilla, the toffee was warm and subtle, the brownie was rich but not overbearing. All 3 flavors worked well in balance. Unfortunately we couldn't take away anything as they don't do boxes. So anything leftover had to be binned by them. Highly recommend the food, the atmosphere is good, it's clean and well cared for inside and out. I believe we got unlucky with the the only outwardly unhappy employee for a server for the first half of our experience. She was still around after we had finished our meals working with the neighboring tables so it wasn't that her shift ended, she never once came back again. The fact that we waited longer to place our orders than it took for them to be made is why this review gets 1 star overall even though the food and atmosphere are great. We almost left due to the ridiculous wait (it was not nearly busy enough to justify that wait for the first and second touches at the table, and wouldn't be justifiable even at the busiest of times).”

“Our server Rowan was lovely and super accommodating, especially for our Celiac party member. She double checked all the GF options to check they were low risk for cross contamination etc. Food was very good and good there was a good atmosphere for Sunday brunch. Boozy brunch was £40 pp Bathroom was the only let down, soap dispensers were gross and basically empty or diluted with water.”
