About Royal Mile Tavern

Royal Mile Tavern is an oak-panelled pub on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, at 127 High St, where local musicians play live every evening. The kitchen works through a British menu that includes haggis bon bons, Cullen Skink as a local soup, and bangers and mash. Dessert options include a Mars bar dessert and waffles topped with ice cream and brownies. At the bar, the drinks list pairs ales and ciders with a pornstar martini. The pub takes walk-ins, so there is no need to book a table. Plenty of tables fill the floor, and a back area gives groups room to sit together.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the bangers and mash, praised as the best sausages one diner has had in a long time, with the Cullen skink close behind. The scotch egg, fish and chips, mussels, and haggis bon bons also draw praise, and several mention generous portions. For dessert, diners single out the waffles with ice cream and brownies, and a Mars bar described as incredible. A pornstar martini and the selection of ciders and ales get mentions too, and one reviewer describes a visit for lunch and a return the next evening for dinner and live music. Service splits the reviews. Several call the staff friendly, including a team that seated a group of eight in a back area. One reviewer describes a long wait to order, a staff member who slammed drinks down without a word, and staff huddled at the back of the bar, and calls the automatic service charge unjustified, though they still rate the food highly.

“We read about this place, right on the royal mile. It’s a bubbling pub with lots of tables. Kids are welcome as long as they order food. The food was outstanding, we ordered bangers and mash, scotch egg and Cullen Skink which is a local soup. Both were amazing. Staff was very nice with our group of 8. They put us in a back area which was perfect. The pornstar martini is delicious”

“Not really sure what to think of this place, came here 11/06/26 at about 7pm. The food was incredible but the staff let the place down massively. It was very difficult to get the attention of the staff and we were left waiting to order for ages,.They spent a lot of time huddled at the back in the bar area. The male member of staff had a particularly bad attitude, when we finally were able to order, he brought our drinks over to the table and literally slammed them down without a word. He spent much of the evening slouched against the wall playing on his phone, peacocking around and play fighting with the female staff. At one point he was overheard making fun of the American customers. He also kept repeatedly lifting up his shirt to reveal his bellybutton and I have no idea why, but it was very off putting whilst I was trying to eat my tea. The rest of the staff were just bang average. Certainly not worth the 10% (thankfully optional) service charge they automatically slap onto your bill at the end. On this basis I can only give 3 stars, and they are all on the food, fair play to the chefs, the cullen skink was amazing.”
