About Malt Shovel Inn
Malt Shovel Inn is a pub in the old town of Edinburgh, at 11-15 Cockburn St. The kitchen runs daily specials, and deep-fried haggis with whiskey sauce is one of them, with haggis fritters also on the menu. On the drinks side, cask ales and a local beer sit alongside a wide range of malts, and the staff make beer recommendations. Dog owners can bring their dogs along, as dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is the dish reviewers raise most, with some calling the fish excellent and the tartar sauce tangy, while others find the fish average or plain and forgettable. Haggis comes close behind, with first-timers praising a deep fried special with whiskey sauce and the haggis fritters, and one noting each beer recommended to them was delicious. Mussels, mac and cheese and breaded chicken also earn mentions. Staff are often described as friendly, nice and helpful, and one says the team did their best to accommodate a short visit. Service draws the sharpest complaints. One reviewer recounts a waiter refusing to put salt on the rim of a margarita, saying "I'm not doing this" in front of waiting customers until a waitress stepped in. Another found service indifferent in a quiet room, and a third says it could be better. A reviewer also calls the local beer flat. Reviewers like the atmosphere and the old town location, and one mentions working there for a few hours at a table with a plug.

“Good for a quick stop but nothing stood out. Chips were good but fish was average. Service could be better.”

“I had a bad experience at this place because of a rude waiter. I went to the pub with a friend for some drinks and lunch. We ordered two margaritas which didn't look like margaritas and asked for salt on the rim, since that’s how a margarita is made. The young staff member with short curly hair replied, "I'M NOT DOING THIS SHIT." I said, "WHAT? (because I didn't believe what I had heard). He said, "I'M NOT DOING THIS SHIT" The "shit" in question was simply putting salt on the rim of the glass. Then a waitress who was there saw the situation, stepped in, and put salt on the rim of the glass… That waiter needs to learn how to speak to people. His behavior was completely rude . I was annoyed because he spoke to me that way and right in front of five other people waiting to place their orders, too. I felt embarrassed. The food was okay , but I don't recommend ordering the margaritas, because that is not a margarita.”

“Get in, you won't regret it ! Really nice pub, the food was really good, with fresh produce, the staff was really nice. Our timing was short and they did their best to accommodate us. The atmosphere really is great as well. You won't regret your time and your money spent here.”
