About Deacon Brodies Tavern
Deacon Brodies Tavern is a pub at 435 Lawnmarket in Edinburgh, named after the real-life historical inspiration behind Jekyll and Hyde. A carved ceiling decorates the pub. The building runs over two floors, with the bar downstairs and a dining area upstairs. The menu leans on pies, including an ale pie and a beef, shin and brisket pie served with mashed potatoes and gravy. Cocktails such as the Pornstar Martini sit alongside a large selection of beers, wines and ciders. Menus are placed on the tables, and orders in the pub are made at the bar. When the upstairs tables are full, the team hands out a pager so guests can have a drink downstairs until a table is ready. Children under 18 in the pub must order food.

Customer Review Summary
Pies draw the most praise, with diners naming the beef, shin and brisket pie, the ale pie and the steak pie, usually served with mashed potatoes, roasted carrots and gravy that reviewers call really good. Close behind are the fish and chips, described as crispy and light, along with the bangers and mash, chunky chips, chicken schnitzel and Cullen Skink. The sticky toffee pudding is singled out for dessert. Reviewers also like the carved ceiling, which one says gives the pub a lot of character, and the friendly staff, with the bar downstairs and dining upstairs. Cocktails earn a mention too, notably a Pornstar Martini described as perfectly prepared. The main complaints concern space and snacks. One reviewer found the first floor completely packed and almost no room upstairs, and another calls the bar snacks basic and underwhelming. One diner who had to wait for a table was given a pager and enjoyed a pint downstairs until it rang.

“Amazing old pub with additional dining upstairs! If you’re coming here, you should get one of the pies, and we recommend the beef, shin, brisket pie. It was amazing and it comes with really good, roasted carrots, and mashed potatoes with gravy. We weren’t feeling like a drink, but there were plenty of people downstairs in the pub. Staff were very kind. The atmosphere and backstory of this place is also really cool! The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story was inspired by Brodie, so this is a cool place to come to.”

“Pleasantly surprised! We weren’t expecting much as restaurant was in a high tourist area, but the food was really good and exceeded our expectations. A special thank you to Brenda, who was incredibly helpful, friendly, and made our visit even better. Great service and a lovely meal—we’d happily come back.”

“Stopped by for food with the family while walking around the area. We sat in the dinning room upstairs and I got the steak pie and my wife got the chicken burger. She really liked her burger but we both loved the pie. The gravy they served with the mashed potatoes was really good as well.”

“Good location and tasty food. After a long walk in the city good place to have dinner. Inside are two floors, first floor with bar and second floor for dining. We been set on the outside. Service is good with friendly stuff. Shady location with good views. Chicken schnitzel with garlic souse and fried potatoes was delicious.”

“The food was absolutely fantastic, and the sticky toffee pudding was so delicious it nearly sent me into a coma of happiness. The only negative part was that it was completely packed with people on the first floor and nearly no room at all on the second floor where the restaurant and the bathroom are located. There was standing room for about 6 people at the max. The food was worth the 30 minute wait though.”
