About The Counting House
Opening only Thursday through Sunday, The Counting House is a wine bar on Nostell Pl in Doncaster that builds its menu around tapas-style small plates and sharing boards. Alongside those, the kitchen turns out dishes including chicken paella, garlic mushrooms and bread with an olive oil and vinegar dip. Wine leads the drinks side, with beer such as a pint of Blue Moon also on offer. The format is table service, so the team takes orders and carries food and drinks over, and drinks ordered at the bar are brought across too. Tables are limited in this small venue, so reservations are recommended and can be made in advance. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance means visitors with mobility needs can get in without stairs. Outdoor seating gives guests the option of eating and drinking outside, and the four-day week keeps the operation focused on Thursday to Sunday trade.

Customer Review Summary
The split here is stark. Happier visitors center on the food and the unhurried, relaxed feel of the room, singling out a sharing board that lived up to expectations, a pint of Blue Moon that one drinker rated the best beer he had had, and a singer who made the evening a good laugh. Several describe the waiting staff as friendly and attentive, and one recalls a server carrying a drink to the table unasked. An equally loud group reports the opposite. A pre-booked birthday party left before drinks arrived, another diner waited close to an hour with the place near empty, and one reviewer suspects food is being plated by the floor staff rather than a chef. Specific dishes draw fire: garlic bread and garlic mushrooms with no garlic taste, frozen-tasting falafel, soggy chips, and a chicken paella described as plain white rice and chicken with bell peppers. One spilled drinks incident ended with replacements but no apology beyond words.

“Food was out standing and the lady who served us called Joe was super friendly polite. She even brought one of the drinks to the table for me after telling her I couldn’t carry two . She is a credit to your work force .”

“Visited on Saturday 2nd April arriving at 7pm for a pre booked table. After being shown to our table nobody came to take a drink order or bring a menu. At 7.20 I collected my own menu from a table and caught the eye of the only waitress and asked to order a drink. 5 mins later an order was taken and at 7.30 we still did not even have a drink. At this point we left and went elsewhere. It was a very disappointing experience because we have been before and it was really good. We were actually there to celebrate a birthday so this was a real dampener on the evening. The Counting House is very local for us and we'd like to go again but not without some assurances that we will not have another experience similar to last night. I am sure that all the tables had been pre booked as it is a small venue so staffing should sufficient to look after your customers. The customer is king... I left feeling like a pauper!”
