Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the coffee and breakfast, with the matcha coffee called one of the best in Derby, a large cappuccino arriving quickly, and a champagne breakfast of great sausages, pan au chocolat and croissants. Close behind is the building, with ornate ceilings, columns and chandeliers, and a quirky interior set against chain coffee shops. Others mention the coffee marble cake, ordering by app and customising a big breakfast, and a private hire meeting with barista coffee all day and dietary needs handled confidently. Staff are described as friendly, though one visitor found them efficient but lacking a smile. The main complaint is food quality and price. One reviewer found the salt and pepper chicken and skin-on fries clearly frozen and pre-prepared, and another called several plates burned and dry, saying the manager gave only a part refund. Another was disappointed that bookings for fewer than six were not accepted for the Christmas menu. One diner found a server quickly brought salt and pepper cruets when they were searching the condiment holder.

“First visit to The Bookcafe, I'd noticed the beautiful building previously and was curious to see inside- it didn't disappoint with it's ornate ceilings, columns and chandeliers. I love how the surroundings have been incorporated making this a beautiful place to enjoy. The menu has something for everyone and pricing was ok, all plates were left clean which is testament to our enjoyment AND served on English china. We arrived quite early and we noticed that alot of tables were already reserved, staff were efficient but lacking a smile which was a shame, we liked the Christmas menu and were discussing booking but any less than six people aren't accepted- very disappointing. I didn't realise until I'd come back from the upstairs toilet that I'd walked right past one on the ground floor, the toilet and sink themselves were clean but a repaint/refurb would enhance the good work of Housekeeping. The Bookcafe really is one of those places where I could kick off my shoes, pour a good coffee and grab a good book for an hour or two.”

“Had the big breakfast and an americano. Food was nice and well cooked. Very good to be able to order on an app and customise, service was fast and friendly. Great place to stop in derby centre”

“Can't rate highly enough. Service from all was fantastic. Food came quickly, was hot, fresh and extremely tasty and great value for money. The inside decor is lovely and very quirky, unlike the sterile blandness of chain coffee stores. Music level was just right, meaning you could have a conversation but still enjoy the background noise. Would highly recommend this over the corporate coffee giants.”

“The service was okay and the staff were friendly and polite, so I have no complaints about them. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. I ordered the salt and pepper chicken with skin-on fries, and it was very obvious that both were frozen/pre-prepared products. I actually recognise the chicken because I’ve bought the exact same product myself from shops before. For the price of eating out, I would expect the food to be freshly prepared rather than something that tastes like it has come straight from the freezer. The staff were lovely, but unfortunately the food quality means I wouldn’t rush back.”

“A very nice cafe with very good coffee. The Matcha coffee is one of the best in Derby . The food is a bit pricey, but you pay for good quality.”
