About The Olive Tree Cafe

The Olive Tree Cafe is a Derby cafe at 6a Albion St, run by the team that used to run the Acropolis on the marketplace. The kitchen cooks home-made style food in an old school cafe format. Breakfast centres on a full English, and the hot dishes include cottage pie, lasagne and liver and onions. Sandwiches and cold drinks sit alongside them for lighter orders. A pensioner deal pairs tea or coffee with bread and butter. Customers are given a number when they order, and it is called out when the food is ready. The cafe opens daily and serves during the daytime only.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return for the full English breakfast, with one calling it the best in the city, and the cottage pie, lasagne, and liver and onions come close behind. Several describe a no-nonsense, old school cafe with generous portions, food served piping hot, and a number system for collecting orders. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and the place is described as clean with a calm, chatty atmosphere that draws an older crowd. Reviewers consistently describe the prices as fair, and one mentions a pensioner deal that includes tea or coffee and bread and butter. Coffee is called only ok by one reviewer, and another found the breakfast merely adequate and would not order it again. One reviewer reports undercooked meat, chips that seemed straight from the freezer, rude staff, and six days of illness after eating there, an account that stands apart from the otherwise warm reviews. Several reviewers mention that the team previously ran the Acropolis, and one praises the hot cottage pie that arrived after a short wait.

“Small café with a lovely atmosphere, I absolutely adore the lasagne and cannot recommend going for breakfast or lunch so cheap and amazing portions”

“if i could give a place 0 stars it would be this absolute piece of crap! the meat was undercooked, the chips came from the freezer and scattered on my plate without the thought of even cooking them. i got food poisoning from this establishment, i was on my toilet for 6 days!!! the staff were extremely rude and simply did not bother taking my order. the waitress who brought my food might as well have thrown the food across the wall, very VERY unprofessional. however i noticed a blonde waitress who was getting treated horribly... almost as if she was being forced to work for these devils. whatever you do, do NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT enter this horrible HORRIBLE place.”

“An excellent pensioner deal for a meal with tea/coffee and bread and butter. £7:25 in June 2026 with quick and friendly service. The generous portion of liver and onions was superb.”
  • Richard Chung
“Good food and decent portions at a decent price. Friendly and attentive staff.”
  • Kevin Elliott
“I only found this lovely place in the past year and have been here a few times now with my Mum when she visits (Acropolis used to be my place of choice before it unfortunately shut) the service, food and general all round feeling to here is great. Staff are very attentive (in the good way) place is clean and the prices are fantastic. Food quality is great and I’d recommend to anyone that asks for decent quality grub at very good prices. Not the best photo but definitely the best full English in the city”
