About Clock Warehouse

Clock Warehouse is a pub and restaurant in Derby, set in a converted mill dating back to 1780 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, with views over the water. Cask ales lead the drinks list, including Pedigree, and the bar also serves wine, prosecco, champagne, gin and whiskey. The kitchen cooks pub dishes such as a steak and ale pie and a cheese leek pie. Food and drink can be ordered at the bar, and a separate dining area gives groups room to eat together.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the canalside setting in the converted mill, along with the cask ales such as Pedigree and the food, with the steak and ale pie, cheese leek pie, halloumi fries, a crispy yet juicy burger and an enormous Yorkshire pudding all singled out. Several call the staff friendly, and one notes the kitchen coped with an egg allergy. Dogs are welcome in the bar, and the outdoor seating gets a mention. The caveat is service under pressure. Reviewers describe a lone waitress covering seating, clearing and complaints, and others say more staff are needed. One diner waited a long stretch for drinks and was overcharged for desserts after the first choice ran out. Another waited an hour for a steak that arrived rump instead of sirloin and medium rare instead of rare, with dishes coming out one at a time. Others mention a slamming kitchen door, a faulty QR ordering system, broken chairs and having to collect their own cutlery, though a returning guest said these were fixed on a later Sunday lunch visit.

“Good food, tasted very fresh. Burger especially was good - crispy outside but still juicy inside. Lovely old building with lots of character. Desserts were a bit disappointing - fairly basic and overpriced.”

“The Clock Warehouse in Shardlow offers an exceptional dining experience, especially if you appreciate a venue steeped in history. Housed in a converted mill dating back to 1780, the pub is beautifully situated along the Trent and Mersey Canal, adding to its charm and appeal. My friends and I visited on Saturday afternoon and were immediately taken by the venue's atmosphere. The blend of historic character with modern comfort makes it an inviting place to relax and enjoy a meal. The selection of cask ales is impressive, with options like pedigree served straight from the barrel, adding an authentic touch to the experience. The staff at the Clock Warehouse deserve special mention for their friendliness and efficiency. They were quick to serve and always ready to assist, making the overall service enjoyable and stress-free. The menu is vast and caters to a variety of tastes, featuring everything from starters and pub classics to specials and puddings, including vegan options. The meals were well-presented, with generous portions that arrived promptly, which is always a plus when dining out with a group. The food was delicious, and the prices were very reasonable, which was a pleasant surprise. The interior is beautifully maintained, and the entire venue is clean and tidy, reflecting the care taken by the staff. There's also a large outdoor seating area, perfect for sunny days. Overall, the Clock Warehouse is a gem of a pub, offering a great combination of history, good food, and excellent service. It's a place I'd gladly return to and highly recommend to others. A note to add _ the kitchen door slamming e every now and then is ruining the calm ambient inside. Urgent intervention is needed. We came back because we genuinely loved the place, which is why this experience was so disappointing. One issue I have raised, still hasn't been addressed, the kitchen slamming door, very unpleasant every time it is used. More concerning however, was the noticeable drop in hygiene and overall standards. Tables had visible glass marks, suggesting they hadn't been properly cleaned between customers. There were leaves inside the venue, and even more outside around Tables and building corners. On top of that, some broken chairs, which doesn't create a great impression. The QR code ordering system also didn't work properly. Overall, the standards seem to have dropped significantly compared to our last visit, which is disappointing given how much we liked this place before. We will give it another try in the future, as we know how good it can be, but this visit was far from a pleasant experience. As I mentioned in my previous review, I returned, and I am pleased to say the experience was back to the standard I was used to. On Sunday, we booked a table for three for lunch, and I was genuinely happy to see everything running smoothly again. Even the previously annoying noise from the kitchen service door has now been resolved. The venue was very clean, exactly what you expect from a place serving food. All staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, even offering suggestions, which really improved the experience. The QR code ordering system worked without any issues. The food was excellent as always, although I should had that food quality was never really the issue. Overall, I am very pleased give them 5 🌟 again, and I will definitely continue to return.”

“We have been many times to the clock warehouse. The food today was good, really enjoyed our food. The staff were polite, professional and kind. This is absolutely not a reflection on them….they were making the best out of what seemed to be….a rubbish situation. Management NEEDS to put on more staff. The servers were seriously working their socks off making sure everything didn’t fall apart, but they were frazzled and tired. Brilliant food, brilliant staff, lovely place BUT put more staff on. Those working conditions weren’t fair. Especially after such a hot week when everyone is already flagging. We will be back BUT we will leave it some time before returning in the hope the staffing situation is sorted Lottie, Camc, Poppy and Elle, assets to the team, keep up the hard work. Thankyou for being wonderful xx”

“Carolynne is an absolute asset to the local pub. From the moment you walk in, she’s welcoming, friendly, and always makes customers feel at home. Her service is attentive without being overbearing, and she handles busy periods with professionalism and a smile. What really stands out is her genuine warmth and ability to remember regulars, creating a great atmosphere that keeps people coming back. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick drink or spending the evening with friends, Carolynne helps make every visit enjoyable. Excellent customer service, a positive attitude, and a fantastic ambassador for the pub. Highly recommended!”

“It's rare I leave a negative review but I've just had a very disappointing meal here. I admit I have eaten it due to an hour wait for a "sirloin" steak that was definitely a rump (way too much fat), which was sent out medium rare (asked for rare), and did not include the mushroom. I was with a larger group but we did order at the same time. It was £23 for this steak. The service staff were polite so no negativity towards them, but when they are coming down with 1 dish at a time and had an hour between the first coming out and the last it's not a very funny joke. We come here for a meal every year for my and a friend's birthday but we will not be eating here again.”
