About Tai Tung
Tai Tung is a dim sum restaurant in Croydon at 544 Purley Way, set inside an Asian supermarket, so a meal can sit alongside a shopping trip. Dim sum is served at lunch and is no longer available by late afternoon, around 5pm. Weekend lunchtimes are busy and bring a queue. The menu also includes roast duck, shrimp dumpling soup and pei pa tofu for those who want a fuller meal. Free parking is offered for limited hours, with a longer allowance on the roof level for visits that run on. Chinese tea is served at the table.

Customer Review Summary
Roast duck is what reviewers return to most, praised as delicious in one account and as a favorite in the form of duck noodles, with soft shell crab and pei pa tofu also named. Dim sum comes close behind, called better than much of central London's by two reviewers, who also rate the barbecue meats as very good. Several mention a long weekend queue, though one says seating moves faster than it looks. The complaints carry real weight. Reviewers describe rude staff, including a waitress who took a menu from children and stood staring while holding a dish. One says fried items came from a plastic box behind the bar. Two report very salty food, a soup base and a dish that left them drinking water. One reviewer found the soya sauce with a takeaway roast duck sour, and the staff could not say when it was made. They declined the offered compensation and discarded the meal. Prices are called high by some, though one finds the dim sum worth the cost. One reviewer notes that dim sum was no longer available at 5pm.

“bad service and rude staff. food doesn’t look good and tastes really bad! no appetite. we ordered a set for 2 people, it came with soup, main and some vegetables. the main dish portion was very small and the vegetable was tasteless! i’ve never had vegetables like that before. would not recommend. would not visit again.”

“I remember coming here over 20 years ago with my family and thoroughly enjoying it. Yesterday we went again and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was delicious especially the duck and soft shell crab. The food came out quickly and there was no wait and the staff was really accommodating.”

“I purchased a roast duck at around 4:00 PM today. The meal came with soya sauce. After returning home, I placed the roast duck and rice together and poured the entire container of soy sauce over the food. However, when I started eating, I noticed that the soy sauce tasted sour. Soy sauce should not be sour, and this strongly suggests that it had gone bad. I then called the restaurant to inquire about the situation, as we wanted to know when the soya sauce had been prepared and how long it had been stored. Surprisingly, the staff were unable to provide this information. This is quite concerning, as food prepared in-house should have proper date tracking for safety reasons. Although the restaurant offered compensation, we declined, as we no longer felt comfortable consuming the food. As a result, we had to discard the entire meal. Since the soya sauce had already been poured over the rice and roast duck and had turned sour, we did not feel it was safe to eat, leading to unnecessary food waste.”

“While the price point is a bit high, the dim sum is exceptional and well worth the cost. Don't let the long line discourage you—the seating moves much faster than it looks.”

“Despite some reviews discouraging you from going in, I decided to try this restaurant inside a quaint Asian supermarket. It was a good experience; the food was plentiful and good, but still nothing different from what you'd find at any Chinese restaurant. The service was good, but the dining room could use a little more cleaning; the bathrooms were clean. I recommend the restaurant owner make the necessary changes to achieve a 5-star hygiene rating. I advise customers to avoid going on weekends if they expect good food and service.”
