Chai Kadai Croydon
Quick info
About Chai Kadai Croydon
Chai Kadai Croydon is a Kerala restaurant at Dexter House in Croydon, built around chai blends that include karak chai and masala chai. The menu follows a Kerala fusion approach and also covers Kerala-style rice and puttu dishes. Puttu pothi comes with beef, chicken or fish options. Biryani is made with chicken, prawn or Chettinad chicken, and is served with papadam, raita, coconut chutney and lemon pickle. The kitchen adjusts spice level on request and has remade a dish without spice for a guest who asked. Food is made fresh to order, and the restaurant can be busy at times, so a wait for orders is possible.

Customer Review Summary
Karak chai draws the most praise, described by reviewers as rich, flavourful and wonderfully delicious, with the Punjabi samosas also recommended. The food is where complaints cluster, and biryani is the recurring problem. One reviewer describes a prawn biryani with a strong odour that was left on the table, another a chicken biryani that did not seem fresh and was only offered a replacement of the same dish. A Chettinad chicken biryani is called dry with unflavourful rice, and a mutton biryani is described as mostly ghee rice with a few hard pieces of meat. Others report undercooked rice and a missing fish curry with the Pothichoru, and a puttu delivery with a dry beef fry. Slow service, no glasses or proper cutlery, and floors and chairs that were not clean enough also come up, and one reviewer reports stomach problems after a meal. Some visitors still describe friendly service, including staff who adjust spice levels, and one diner's too-spicy Manchurian Gobi was remade without spice and without fuss.

“Very disappointing experience from start to finish. We placed our order and had to wait an extremely long time for the food to arrive. Even a simple soda for my husband took ages to be served. The biggest issue was the prawn biryani. It had a strong, unpleasant odour and clearly did not seem fresh, so we couldn't eat it. To make matters worse, the staff didn't even clear the spoiled biryani from our table after we informed them. We had to sit there smelling it throughout the rest of our meal, which completely ruined the dining experience. There was no proper cutlery provided, and although water was served, there weren't even any glasses. Overall, the service was poor, the food quality was unacceptable, and there was a lack of attention to basic customer care. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant.”

“I HIGHLY recommend the karak chai and the Punjabi samosas. The chai is a little small but it is wonderfully delicious! The staff can accommodate to your spice tolerance; please ask when placing your order. It can be a bit busy at times so please give some time for your order to be ready as everything is made fresh. Edit: I returned and was served by Sahid J who was phenomenal.”

“I ordered puttu pothi from uber eats. I ordered because i saw a video in their insta page. So in that video the item comes with puttu, chicken curry , chicken fry, omlete and papodoms. I ordered puttu pothi with beef instead of chicken because we can select either chicken, beef or fish from the menu.I was expecting all the items as they showed on their insta video. When i opened it was really disappointed, i got only puttu and beef fry. I contacted them and they said it only comes with puttu and beef roast. Eventhough if i got beef roast i was ok. But they send with beef fry and it was so dry to have with puttu. I was not able to finish the puttu with that beef fry.”

“It sounds like you and your family had a fantastic time at Chai Kadai Croydon! The staff's quick thinking to bring out cold milk when the kids found the Fish Kanthari too spicy is a perfect example of truly first-class and thoughtful service. It's those little details that turn a good meal into a great family memory. The spread you ordered sounds absolutely mouthwatering: The Parathas: The Paal Paratha and media paratha seem to have been the stars of the night, especially with how extremely tasty they were. The Starters & Sides: Classic crowd-pleasers like the Chicken 65 and masala fries always hit the spot, especially for kids. Main & Drinks: Savoring some seafood noodles, washing it down with a refreshing mojito, and finishing the evening with a warm cup of masala chai is the perfect way to wrap up a meal. Getting such high-quality food and attentive service at a reasonable price is always a win for a family night out. Are you planning on making this one of your regular family spots, or is there another dish on their menu you're keen to try next time?”

“We ordered two chicken biryanis, and unfortunately, the food was not fresh. We informed the waiter about our concerns, but the response was not helpful. We were told that the food had been prepared that day, which did not seem true based on its condition and taste. What was even more disappointing was that the only solution offered was to replace it with the same biryani, which made no sense given that our concern was about the freshness of the food itself. In the end, we paid the full amount for both biryanis despite not being able to eat them. Overall, a very disappointing experience due to both the quality of the food and the way the issue was handled.”
