About The White Hart

The White Hart is a pub on Nayland Rd in Colchester, serving cask ales alongside a traditional menu. Sunday roast comes with gravy and a choice of lamb, beef or chicken. Lunch dishes run to sandwiches, toasties and rolls, served with side salad, coleslaw and chips, and a mushroom and stilton starter is on the menu. Dogs are welcome Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays they stay outside because the pub is so busy. The pub takes walk-ins, including on Sundays, and tables can also be booked. The landlord and staff talk guests through dairy free and other dietary requests.

Customer Review Summary

The Sunday roast is what most reviewers return for, with the lamb, beef and chicken all described as well cooked, one calling the chicken not at all dry and another praising the gravy. Close behind is a lunchtime menu of sandwiches, toasties and rolls served with salad, coleslaw and chips, plus a mushroom and stilton starter, with portions repeatedly called large and prices reasonable. Reviewers consistently describe friendly, helpful staff, and one says the landlord talked through dairy free options at length. Others mention being fitted in on a Sunday without a reservation, a party never feeling rushed, and a team that let two travellers in before opening and handed them bottles of water. The caveats are small: one group found the pub a little cool inside, and another diner had to ask more than once for water. One reviewer suggests checking which days are available before going for lunch, and another notes dogs are welcome Monday to Saturday but only outside on Sundays.

“31 March 2026 ‐ We were a group of four all having a light lunch. We had a sandwich, a toastie and two rolls which had plenty of fillings, all served with a nice fresh side salad, coleslaw and chips and a total of 6 drinks. This all came to just over £68. The food was lovely and fresh and there was plenty of it. Everyone enjoyed their food and agreed that this is definitely a place we would visit for food again in the future. Our server was a very pleasant young lady who tolerated our banter very well and had a great sense of humour. Thank you from us all 😊 The only reason for not given full marks for atmosphere was due to it being a little on the cool side for our liking - especially my elderly parents, but they jokingly stated they would wear their thermals on their next visit! 😁”

“Sunday roast was basic but good, had the chicken which was really well cooked and not at all dry. Very fairly priced. Would have been 5 for service but had to ask more than once for water. Lovely atmosphere, clearly a Sunday lunch favourite for many.”
