About Yew Tree

The Yew Tree is a pub in Colchester on The Causeway, set in a building that dates back to the early 1600s and still has its thatched roof, cobbled courtyard and original timbers. It is open daily. The menu runs from breakfasts and seasonal specials to a Sunday roast, with roast lamb and roast pork among the options. Pies include a lamb shank pie, and the mains feature honey roasted pork belly and steak, with puddings and desserts to finish. Drinks are ordered at the bar, and food is brought to the table. Local cask ales are on offer, and the grounds hold a beer garden and a pond or fish fountain. Tables are booked ahead, and the pub calls to confirm on the day. The team also hosts birthday celebrations and larger group lunches.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the Sunday lunch and pub mains, naming the roast lamb, the lamb shank pie and the honey roasted pork belly, with the signature burger and a pie also praised as tasty. Close behind is the setting, where diners describe sitting outside in the courtyard, by the pond and in the beer garden among flowers and grape vines, with a doggie station and a book corner for children noted too. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, patient and attentive, and one group says they presented and sang along to a birthday cake brought from home. The caveats are specific: one reviewer found the roast pork a bit dry, and the wife's steak, ordered well done, came burnt along with the mushrooms and a bitter peppercorn sauce. Others call portions a slight criticism or the cost a bit expensive. One diner, told by phone that kitchen equipment problems meant a limited menu, still stayed and enjoyed lamb shank pie.

“Staff and service was great. I had the roast dinner which was ok, not great, pork was a bit dry. Wife had the steak which burnt, asked for well done but us was burnt, along with mushrooms. The peppercorn sauce tasted very rich and bitter.”

“What a real gem! We prebooked and everything was ready for when we arrived. We received a warm welcome, fantastic service in the bar a quaint courtyard to enjoy a drink, followed by an amazing Sunday lunch (the roast lamb was incredible) where once again the staff were amazing, friendly and attentive, our server was Pip she was particularly friendly and attentive making sure we always had everything we needed. We have to wait too long for food to come out either, and there was plenty of it. We were both so full we couldn't manage dessert! Which means we'll just have to go back! Would highly recommend.”

“We visited for a birthday celebration and were very well looked after. Tilly, Sophie, Pip & Sarah were all lovely and helped to make the evening special even down to presenting a birthday cake we’d brought with us - and staying to sing Happy Birthday! 😁 A lovely evening, thank you 🎉”

“This is such a beautiful, peaceful little countryside pub. The food was gorgeous, I mean that! We sat in the sun outside and played cards by the pond and had such a lovely time. The two waitresses were really polite and the pub in general attracted nice custom and atmosphere. I loved it here.”

“Had a lovely meal. 2 adults 1 child. Service was lovely. Food was good, not exactly gourmet, but good. Cooked well, no complaints, not posh but decent. Only slight criticisms might be the portion sizes but that is ofcourse a personal matter. We had mains and puddings and 2x drinks each for £70 which is not bad. I would definitely go here again it's a nice Pub.”
