Quick info
About The Whitehills
The Whitehills is a pub in Chester Le Street with five hand pumps for real ale and an acoustic music club that runs every week. The kitchen serves parmo, including a "parmo hotshot", with hand cut chips. Starters come as small plates in a choose-3 or choose-5 deal. The team brings food to the table, so there is no need to queue at the bar to order. Quiz or bingo nights fill the evenings, and the pub shows Sky Sports and BT Sports events for anyone following the match. Dogs are welcome inside, which suits regulars who bring a four-legged companion along.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the food, naming a well cooked burger, a parmo hotshot with hand cut chips, and fish finger and cheese sandwiches with salad, crisps and dressing. Portions are called big, and one parent describes the kids portions as massive. Friendly staff come up almost as often, including a server who explained what was unavailable from the menu. Dog walkers like that dogs are welcome inside and out, with a rear beer garden, and one reviewer calls it a real community hub, mentioning the Wednesday acoustic music club. The complaints are specific. One diner found the chips still slightly frozen and the pie different from the menu picture, and another found the service a tad slow. A real ale drinker reports all five hand pumps empty and went to Wetherspoons instead. A former regular has stopped going because quiz or bingo nights fill the pub, and on the last visit the empty lounge tables all carried reserved signs.

“Used to be a nice place to go for a quiet drink and chat now you can't get a table due to quiz or bingo every night so we've stopped going now last time we tried going in lounge plenty empty tables with reserved on so we can't just have a drink or meal without reserving a table ?”

“Went today for lunch. The food was superb, we really enjoyed the fish finger and cheese sandwiches. Especially all the accompanying salad with crisps and dressing. The young man was friendly and chatty. Nothing was a problem to him. I would highly recommend the Whitehills. Thank you.”

“Nice local pub with food but no good for real ale drinkers. I visited on 9th February 2024 the place was clean and tidy and I received a warm welcome from the member of staff that served me. However it was a great disappointment that despite having 5 hand pumps they were all empty of real ale. Sadly I went to Wetherspoons instead. I will give this place another try if they can get their act together by managing their availability of cask beers,”

“New owners doing a great job. Lovely piping hot tasty food. Table service, chips especially good, not frozen muck. Kids portions massive, simple sausage chips and beans would suffice. Could do with a kids burger and chips maybe, and a steak knife. Early days but everything great.”
