About The Engine Room

The Engine Room is a gastropub in Gateshead, at 3 Rockcliffe Wy, and it opens daily. The kitchen is built around a chicken parmo served with homemade chips and salad, alongside a mixed grill. Vegetarian diners can order a vegetarian lasagne, which comes with homemade chips, salad and garlic bread. A board of specials runs next to the main menu. Food and drink are both ordered at the bar, including any additional pints. Inside, booths and separate seating areas divide the pub.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return to The Engine Room mainly for the big portions, with the chicken parmo and the mixed grill named most often, and the chips described as proper, homemade and divine. Close behind are the specials on the wall, vegetarian options such as a lasagne, and dishes like a chilli beef burrito, mince and dumplings, and a hot beef baguette. Several call the staff friendly, mention good value, and praise the drinks range, including a craft beer and double maxim on draught. The recurring complaint concerns service. Two reviewers describe a starter that never arrived because staff said it hadn't been ordered, a dismissive attitude from the woman behind the bar, and no one checking on tables. One says the main took a long time and another notes the food slows when the pub is busy. Ordering food and drinks at the bar is a surprise for some first-time visitors. A few suggest calling ahead for a table, and one diner was glad a booking over the phone secured a seat before the place filled up.

“Exactly how a pub should be. Beautifull location. Plenty of parking. Good range of drinks including my favourite craft beer Pagan queen. Excellent menu and lots of specials on the wall. Big portions and great quality food including proper chips. Good safe atmosphere and great staff. Very good value for money.”

“Service abysmal, the blonde old trout behind the bar had a shockingly bad attitude and very miserable, not attentive to tables at all. Looked like she didn't want to be there, and just generally unfriendly. Table wasn't cleared and starter didn't arrive saying it hadn't been ordered?Waited 40 mins for the main, food was lovely but unfortunately the service ruined the whole experience. Attitude was disgusting when ordering at the bar. Would not recommend. 1/5. Could be so much better with friendly, attentive staff. The older blonde waitress needs some serious training in customer service. Maybe not the job for her.”

“I write this as someone who has previously worked as front of house staff for many years in various establishments and my partner is a chef and has been for 15 years. We arrived 10 minutes late for our 7.30 booking (totally our fault). I gave the booking name to the lady behind the bar who told us where our table was and that the kitchen closed at 8pm (something that would have been nice to be told when we booked the table but it wasn't a massive issue). It would have been nice to be shown/seated at our table. We sat for a bit and realised you must order at the bar - again we would have appreciated this being communicated as it was our first visit here. My partner went to the bar and ordered our food - one starter and two mains. Upon ordering we were told one of the meals was sold out (usually this is something you tell a table once they are seated). So we ordered something else. After about 15 minutes with no starter of mozzarella sticks , I asked the staff how long it would be. They told us there was no starter ordered, just two mains - I personally didn't order but my partner assured me he did order the starter. Anyway, our mains came and we were asked if we'd like any sauces etc. My partner asked for another pint and was told you have to order it at the bar (personally found this a bit odd). Our food was beautiful; I had the chicken parmo and my partner had the mixed grill. We agreed the food was absolutely delicious but my partner did explain to a lady behind the bar that the service was really bad. He came back to the table and mentioned the dismissive and rude attitude staff had to his comments. During our meal, we had nobody check in how the food was (hospitality 101). We didn't feel welcomed or looked after during our visit which is a shame because the food is stunning. We mentioned our concerns at the end to a young blonde woman and a young gentleman who were very apologetic (which was appreciated) and we asked them to tell the chefs they cooked a delicious meal. Overall it's really sad, we try to support local businesses but won't be returning and won't be recommending to others.”
