About The Station House
The Station House is a pub in Durham, set under a Victorian railway viaduct. Drinks are served through a hatch rather than a bar, with real ales and real ciders on offer and a selection that rotates regularly. An upstairs room provides additional space beyond the main room. A departure screen shows live train times for Durham station, and the pub has no TV or slot machines. There is no food as such, though Scotch eggs and pork pies are available to go with a drink. Dogs are welcome. The route up to Durham railway station is a steep hill.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return to The Station House above all for its real ales and ciders, with several praising a rotating, hard-to-find selection of local cask beers and real ciders. One reviewer singles out a porter and a brown ale, and another notes a good gluten free beer selection. Drinkers describe a proper community pub under the railway viaduct, with no TV or slot machines, just beer and conversation, and a space that feels like a living room. Staff and the host come across as friendly and knowledgeable, and locals are described as welcoming. Dogs are welcome, and drinks are served through a hatch rather than a bar. Food is not the focus, though a few mention Scotch eggs and pork pies alongside a pint. The one practical caution comes from reviewers about the steep walk uphill to Durham station, with one advising plenty of time. Several mention the departure board showing live train times, which lets them finish a drink before heading off.

“We popped into this great pub twice during our 2 night stay in Durham. This is a gem of a bar, nothing flashy or trendy just a great local outlet. The selection of beers either cask or keg is tremendous, I think I counted 22 when I was in so be prepared to have a browse before you choose. The prices were reasonable considering the choice you have and the staff were very friendly. Great atmosphere and I would highly recommend this bar if you’re visiting Durham”

“Nice bar. Some good beers in tap. Gluten free beer selection is good. Dog friendly. Staff are nice”

“If you like Real Ales and Cider this is probably the place for you. Good Quality beers, canny staff and a corking atmosphere. Not sure why Google insists on always having food as a rating, not everywhere serves food. The best indication of how good a place is would you return for another visit and it's a resounding yes. The photograph of the train times contains real time information for Durham train station, it is a steep hill to get there so leave plenty of time.”

“Great choice of beers and ciders, many of which you'll struggle to find anywhere else in this area. Nice stop-off if your using the Rail station. This is a proper pub without the TV & slot machines, just good beer and good talk. Friendly, and knowledgeable host. No food as such but they do a nice line in Scotch eggs, keeping it simple, all about the beer and the company. Selfie-queens stay away, it's not for you.”

“The Station House is a masterclass in what a proper community pub should be, trading flashy decor and loud music for world class cask ales. Tucked away under the viaduct, they have a rotating selection of local beers and real ciders in a space that feels more like a cozy living room than a business. It’s incredibly welcoming, dog-friendly, and perfect for a pork pie and a pint. Cheers!”
