Quick info
About The Four Elms - JW Bassett Pub
The Four Elms - JW Bassett Pub is a pub on Elm St in Roath, Cardiff, with a beer garden split into separate open and covered areas, one of them beside the bar. Sport shows on many screens inside, including football on match days, so the pub works for watching a game. The bar pours a wide selection of beers and ciders on tap, and a can fridge holds craft ale. Non-alcoholic Guinness is also available. The kitchen serves standard pub fare including burgers and chips, along with vegetarian and vegan options. There is no table service, so food is brought to the table once it is ready. Dogs are welcome, and entry is for guests aged 18 and over only.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the beer range, from varied taps to craft ale in a can fridge, along with ciders and a non-alcoholic Guinness. Match days earn praise for the atmosphere and the large number of screens, and several call the beer garden awesome. The staff are described as friendly, the bar staff as fast, and one reviewer notes a wide mix of music. Food splits opinion. Some find it solid, simple but pleasant and reasonably priced, and mention the vegetarian and vegan options and good chips. Others report a soggy Welsh Rarebit, a very salty ham steak, tough and dry lamb, a dry burger, and a Philly cheese steak with raw onion and undercooked steak. One diner who asked for an allergen menu was told nothing on it was gluten free and felt dismissed, then called the dirty fries one of the most horrific meals they had eaten.

“I came to Cardiff for a few days, and came here for my evening meal each night. It's a nice friendly place. Food prices are very reasonable, and the food itself is really nice! I enjoyed every single thing I ordered. It was lovely. Simple but pleasant. The staff are friendly. If I visit Cardiff again, I will definitely be coming back here. Would definitely recommend. 😊”

“The Four Elms has a very nice beer garden and that’s about it. After asking for an allergen menu (a legal requirement) I was told that not one item on the menu was gluten free. I explained that I am not celiac so cross contamination/shared fryers weren’t an issue but was dismissed quickly. I then had to discern for myself which foods I could eat. I ordered their dirty fries which was honestly one of the most horrific meals I’ve ever eaten. To top this off my glass of wine was dusty and so had bits in my mouth. Such a shame as this pub has lots of potential.”

“The worst Philly Cheese Steak I have ever eating in my life. 10 pounds for this... Raw onion and the steak was not well done, it was congratulations!! Awful food.”

“Good selection of beers and ciders. Pub food is solid. I was only around for 3 nights but ended up going twice. Second time there was football on the TV which isn't my thing but no big deal. Would go back.”

“Great atmosphere especially on match days. Plenty of screens and a fantastic selection of beers including craft ale in a can fridge. Over 18s only. Did not eat food but seems like decent selection of standard pub fare.”
