Quick info
About Restaurant Twenty Two
Restaurant Twenty Two is a fine dining restaurant on Chesterton Rd in Cambridge, set inside a converted Victorian townhouse with seating split between a ground floor room and an upstairs dining area. The kitchen runs a fixed-price monthly menu of contemporary British dishes, extending to a tasting menu with a wine flight pairing at two price levels or a soft drinks pairing. The bread course brings a laminated brioche served with a peaty, mushroom butter, and each course arrives with a description from staff at the table. Recurring dishes include a lobster course, a Yorkshire beef and fermented mushroom course, and a bream course. Reservations are required. Celebration bookings receive a birthday card and treat, and the upstairs room seats diners in close quarters.

Reviewers most often mention laminated brioche, sweetbread dish, mackerel dish and wine pairing flights.
Customer Review Summary
The tasting menu draws the strongest praise, with reviewers repeatedly singling out the laminated brioche with mushroom butter, the sweetbread dish, and the mackerel with jalapeño as highlights, alongside desserts and the wine flights, including the higher-tier pairing that several found richer than the standard option. Diners consistently describe the front-of-house team as warm and knowledgeable, walking them through each course, and multiple reviewers mention thoughtful touches like a birthday card or cake. The Victorian townhouse setting, centered on a stained-glass window, comes up often as intimate though one reviewer found the upstairs area cold and dark with close seating. A few note inconsistencies: one diner felt the tasting menu lacked a unifying theme, and another was served by a different staff member for each course, calling it confusing. One birthday party also described being left waiting fifteen minutes at the end of the meal without being offered the bill or petit fours, calling it a disappointing close to an otherwise attentive service.

“A masterclass in modern dining. Housed inside a charmingly converted Victorian townhouse, this intimate neighbourhood gem turns local Cambridgeshire produce into pure magic across an ambitious full tasting menu. Between the exceptional food and the effortless, welcoming front-of-house team, Restaurant 22 stands out as one of the most delightfully unfussy, relaxed Michelin-starred dining experiences you could ever hope to visit.”

“We came to Restaurant 22 to celebrate my partner's 40th birthday. It was an exceptional experience, with friendly and attentive service and the most incredible tasting and beautifully prepared food. The restaurant is cosy with minimal decor which really works in the old building and allows the stained glass window to be the star of the decor. The birthday card and treat were a thoughtul touch. Michelin star food and service but without pretentiousness which makes you feel welcome. This is our second visit to Restaurant 22 and based on this latest visit, we can't wait to return.”

“Produce is fresh - the asparagus in particular was cooked to perfection, deliciously tender. However, there was no consistent theme running through the menu. The restaurant is a bit cold, diners are seated in somewhat close quarters and the upstairs area is rather dark. We were served by a new member of staff for each course which was rather confusing. A decent fine dining experience, probably unrivalled in Cambridge but not remarkable. Room for improvement!”

“The food is the art! Beautifully decorated dish with excellent signature wine pairing! The service was super attentive and wonderful”

“I went here for a birthday lunch and I would give it a 4.75, but rounded up to a 5 because a 4 would be in injustice. We got the discovery wine pairing and it was okay but not super imaginative. We probably should have gone for the signature wine pairing or made our own selection. The menu was: Nocellara olives: Good. Hechfield, pickled walnut: Good. Native lobster, sea buckthorn, gochugaru: Exceptional and very interesting. It was my first time eating something that I expected to be solid but it was not. It was surprising and delightful. The lobster taste was subtle and very enjoyable. Yorkshire Longhorn beef and fermented mushroom: Exceptional and also very interesting. I loved the fermented mushroom leafs. Bead and butter: this was my favourite, the brioche was mind blowing and I loved the peaty and the mushroom butter. I had dreams about this after. Newlyn mackerel, jalapeño, Flourish tomato: Very good. The jalapeño ceviche/tartar was fun. Rose veal sweetbread, sweetcorn, vadouvan, black lime: Exceptional and very interesting. It was my first time trying sweetbread and I was pleasantly surprised. Wild Cornish sea bream, girolles, courgette, basil: Very good. This was perfectly cooked and deliciously paired with girolles. St Bride’s duck, salted blackcurrant, beetroot, duck liver: Exceptional. It was perfectly paired with the current and the beets. I particularly liked the liver as well as the dumpling. Amalfi lemon, marigold, almond ice cream: Exceptional. This was refreshing and the perfect thing to have between the duck and the desert. Pedro Ximenez, tonic, Manjari 64%, Tahitian vanilla: Very good. I really liked this. I was expecting the chocolate to be a lot but it was perfectly light. The birthday cake: was a very sweet touch. We didn’t get the petite fours but we wanted them. We weren’t offered the option because we chose to get an aperitif before we wanted to order the petite fours. By the time they came back we were ready to leave anyway. This is the reason why it didn’t get a perfect 5 in my books is because the service was not great at the end of the meal. We were just kind of left upstairs without being given the option to order anything else or pay our bill for a bit too long. We were stilling there waiting for them to come back for about 10-15min. It was a shame to end on that note. Was it worth the cost? Yes. The thing that put us off a bit did not make it not worth it because the rest of the service was impeccable.”
