About Michaelhouse Cafe
Michaelhouse Cafe is a cafe in Cambridge set inside an old church, with tables on two levels. A wooden spiral staircase leads to the upper tables, which look out over the roof, the stained glass and the church hall. Large glass doors open onto that hall, where the pews and altar are. Coffee comes with cakes and pastries, including Basque burnt cheesecake. The breakfast menu lists poached eggs on sourdough toast, and sandwiches are made on focaccia bread. Dogs are welcome, so walkers can bring a companion along. Money spent here goes to support the church.

Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers come for the setting, a café inside an old church where tables sit on two levels, with a wooden spiral staircase, a view of the roof and stained glass from upstairs, and glass doors onto the church hall with its pews and altar. Cakes draw the most food praise, led by the Basque burnt cheesecake and a lemon blueberry cake, while a breakfast ciabatta with a latte also gets a good word. Drinks and coffee split opinion: some call the coffees well made, with a good choice of teas, while another finds the coffee weak and milky. Value is a recurring complaint. One reviewer found the poached eggs on sourdough overcooked with hard, burnt toast, another thought the matcha latte bitter and greyish green, and a sandwich on focaccia was called dry and hard to swallow. Others note that service slips when it gets busy, and that tables are slow to be cleared of used plates. One reviewer notes that choices run limited near the end of lunch, and another says the money supports the church.

“Enjoyed a slice of the lemon blueberry cake! It was the nicest cake I have had in a while! Would definitely recommend and come back!”

“Lovely little cafe in the centre of Cambridge. Plenty of seating inside and out. Lots of cakes and sandwiches (very big - on focaccia bread). Looked lovely, Nice fillings but still felt a bit dry and a hard to swallow. Decor is lovely Also be aware if you go towards the end of lunch the food choices will be limited”

“Unique cafe within the church. Had breakfast ciabbatta and a latte. Very delicious. Plenty of seating with wifi available. Not the cheapest but money goes to support the church. worth a visit .”

“Great place to stop off for coffee (or tea) and cake after a stroll along the Backs. Welcoming staff who were exceptionally efficient at serving multiple customers, minimising the usual wait for those wanting complicated drinks. Excellent choice of drinks and cakes. It was busy a teatime but plenty of tables and although lots of people chatting, had a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere”

“I don't come to this place because it has the best coffee around and the cakes and food are just fine. I come here because it's arguably the prettiest cafe around. Built inside an old church, this place is quiet, cool, relaxing and surrounded by history and beautiful architecture. The outdoor seating areas are also very nice.”
