About The Royal Standard Pub
On Mill Rd in Cambridge, The Royal Standard Pub is an independent pub pouring draught and bottled Belgian beer alongside local ales, spirits, wine and real cider. It holds the Cambridge CAMRA Cider pub of the year 2023 title, and the cider range is wide enough to suit anyone who wants more than one pour. Drinks come in glassware matched to the choice ordered. Greek food comes from Tzatziki, a partner business working on site, with souvlaki, spanakopita and fries on the list. Diners order it through a QR code on the table. Dogs are welcome, so regulars can bring theirs along for a drink.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the Greek street food from the partner kitchen, with the chicken souvlaki, fries and spanakopita named, and diners call it delicious, with large portions and fair prices. Close behind is the drinks list: a wide range of Belgian and continental beers, cask ales, and an extensive cider selection that one reviewer says is the best outside Somerset. Several mention glassware matched to the drink. The relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, dog-friendly welcome and heated outdoor area also come up repeatedly. The main caveat is that the place can feel cramped when busy, and one reviewer wanted a visible list of tap beers with strengths and prices. Another found the service only okay: food ordered by QR code at a quiet Thursday lunchtime took more than half an hour, so a meal was left unfinished, and the visit felt pricey compared with a local pub. Staff handing out complimentary mince pies at Christmas is one detail a reviewer singled out.

“The quintessential Cambridge pub. Fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff, community feel, great beer and awesome greek street style food. And very dog friendly.”

“The crown jewel of Mill Road! The best selection of ciders you can find outside of Somerset in a pub, alongside a wide selection of cask ales and European beers. Very tolerant staff members who put up with me after one too many Thatcher's Cheddar Valley pints... The food is also sublime. Very reasonably priced and excellent quality greek food. All in all a fantastic local with a great community and we're very lucky to have it on our doorstep.”

“Beer selection is great. Customer service is okay. Food from Tzatziki is okay. We got there at noon on a Thursday, no other customers there. Ordered a beer just fine and they have a good selection. Ordered food on our phone with the QR code on the table, didn't get our food until 12:45, which was a little more than 30 minutes later. My husband had a meeting to get to so didn't get time to eat his whole meal, and the food was just okay. Fries were good. Spanakopita was good, and if your just coming for a beer, the place is fine, but a bit pricey compared to my local. I doubt we'll be back.”

“Ideal spot for a quick drink one weekday afternoon. Nice range of draught and bottled drinks, and we were happy in the small but adequate beer garden.”

“A wide variety of continental beers that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. I also enjoy the glassware provided that is often related to the drink you're specifically ordering. The service is friendly and there's a welcoming atmosphere throughout. However, it is a popular place, so conditions can feel cramped if you're not nimble of body and foot. I would appreciate a bar tariff easily visible for the beers on tap that would allow you to see what percentages each and their respective prices, so you can easily budget your exploration (in both price and inebriation).”
