About The Old Sun Inn
The Old Sun Inn is a pub at 33 High St in Buxton, housed in a 17th-century coaching inn with a stone floor and oak panelling. Open fires and several small rooms and corners divide the interior, so the building works as a set of separate spaces rather than one large room. The menu lists 77 dishes of simple pub food, including fish and chips and BBQ cauliflower wings. A Sunday roast is served, with roast turkey, chicken and beef topside among the meats. Starters and small plates sit alongside the mains for those who want to build a meal from several dishes. The bar pours cask ales and keeps a wine selection.

Customer Review Summary
The roast dinner is the dish reviewers raise most, with a Sunday roast described as generous and tasty, the beef topside called high-quality, and one couple calling it easily one of the best they have had. Close behind are the fish and chips, BBQ cauliflower wings and a Hunters chicken, plus small plates that turned out huge. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, ales are said to be kept well, and open fires, little rooms and a welcome for dogs come up often. The main complaint is inconsistent cooking. Two reviewers felt the food was reheated or frozen. One got dry roast turkey and chicken with tasteless gravy and overcooked broccoli. The other got a sirloin surf and turf that arrived basically blue, with five bits of scampi, two onion rings and oven chips. A third reviewer found a chicken burger turned out to be goujons with hard batter. The surf and turf diner ate only half and bought a kebab across the road afterwards.

“This has got to be one of the worst meals out I've had for a long time. Ordered the sirloin surf and turf (medium rare). Steak was basically blue and clearly frozen, in fact the entire meal was clearly frozen and reheated. You'd get a better meal in spoons. 5 bits of breaded scampi, 2 onion rings and oven chips. Only ate half of it because i was starving after a long walk in the rain, ended up getting a kebab over the road after. Gave two stars because it was easy to have the dogs in the snug. Wont be coming back!”

“We were recommended to try this place by a friend. The Staff were lovely and very polite & friendly but unfortunately the food was not good. Everything appeared to be reheated and considering the speed it was delivered I'd say it definitely was. We had the roast Turkey & Chicken. Very dry, gravy tasteless and the broccoli over cooked and tasted strange. Peas were also served, which for me is a cheap plate filler. Peas! With so many vegetables to choose from. Very disappointed 😞”

The staff are amazing, so friendly and welcoming, and there’s always such a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. It’s a proper family-friendly pub where everyone is made to feel welcome, including dogs. Great food, great atmosphere and genuinely lovely people. We always look forward to coming back!”
