  “This review relates to the restaurant and bar area of this hotel. I visited The George for an evening meal. We had been driving all day as was flying from Bristol airport. We were welcomed by Alby, who took our drinks order and took us through the menu, including the specials. He was well presented, professional and engaging. He gave us a lot of detail to help make a very difficult decision on what food to eat as it all looked so amazing. The first course was served by Stella. Again she was totally engaging asking how our day had been and again gave us more information on the menu. Stella had an infectious smile and really spoke with pride about The George and its food. She also was very smartly dressed. Both Alby and Stella again come over once during the meal. Both starters and mains were wonderful and another member of staff (Adam) engaged us regarding deserts and coffees. He told us more about the George and its facilities. What a wonderful start to a holiday. Now the food abroad and staff attentiveness needs to meet the standards of The George”

  “Really lovely food with professional and friendly staff. We've been a few few times and they always have interesting new options. Some of pur party are vegetarian and the options are lovely too. Thank you!”

  “We arrived very late. We tried to contact the pub to tell them we would be late, but no answer despite ringing many many times. We were shown the wrong room when we arrived . Then we were shown our booked room, however it was very hot and stuffy and we couldn't open the window more than an inch. The sink in the bathroom was so tiny that you need to be a contortionist to use it properly ie to brush your teeth and wash your face. The continental breakfast was sad ... plastic white bread. Nice location, lovely garden and all seemed clean. Won't be stopping there again .”

  “Our lucn time meal with family was meant to be a treat for me and my wife today. However, apart from the staff who we're excellent, the food was a real let down. Both fish and chips meals were very greasy, the chicken on another meal was tiny and we had to ask for the walnuts for the Wardolff salad as there was none. On top of this, a service charge was added to our bill. Not a fan of. Didn't complain about the food at the time, just won't be coming back.”

  “We came on Father’s Day (Sunday) we had lovely food and the service from the girls was great we felt really looked after. Would highly recommend. Hopefully you all get some time off to enjoy the weather ( and possibly the footy too ! ) 🤩”

  “Wifi lets it down a bit. Requires giving name,address,age,email and phone number to some company. Not something I was willing to do. Bed was soft and room was comfortable. A smart tv or access to hdmi socket would have been nice but probably thats another wifi issue.”

  “I sort of wanted to like The George. It has all the right ingredients. Old pub. Nice location. Big garden. The sort of place that appears in lifestyle magazines under headings like “Ten Countryside Pubs You Must Visit Before Selling Your London Flat and Starting a Microbrewery.” But somewhere along the way it has fallen victim to a very modern disease: the desperate need to modernise. The garden now sports one of those giant stretch tents that have spread across Britain like an invasive species. The interiors have been tastefully redesigned to within an inch of their life. Everything is stylish. Everything is curated. Everything is beige. And the end result is that the place has accidentally become utterly bland. I arrived on a sunny Friday evening at about 5.30pm, prime pub time. The first thing I encountered was a queue for the bar. Not a pub scrum, which is one of Britain’s great democratic institutions. An actual queue. A line. Like we were waiting to renew our passports. Then came the discovery that there was essentially nothing on draft because, apparently, the gas had gone. Or something. The explanation was vague enough to suggest either a catastrophic technical failure or a hostage situation in the cellar. Whatever the cause, it left bottles as the only option. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a problem. Open bottle. Hand to customer. Take payment. The process should take roughly the same amount of time as blinking. Yet somehow four people behind the bar managed to turn it into a major logistical exercise. They moved with the urgency of civil servants on a team-building retreat. What exactly they were doing remains one of the great mysteries of modern hospitality. Meanwhile, a surprising number of customers were trying to pay in cash. Which raised another question. Who still pays cash? Apart from children, tourists and people conducting transactions they’d rather not discuss with an accountant. If I worked for HMRC I’d spend less time analysing spreadsheets and more time standing quietly next to pub bars. Anyone paying for three pints and a packet of crisps with a roll of twenties should probably receive a follow-up letter by Monday morning. In the end, The George manages the difficult feat of being both busy and disappointing. It looks like the sort of pub you want to spend an evening in, but once you’re there, you realise you’re standing in a queue drinking bottled beer while wondering where all the character went. A pub can survive bad décor. It can survive mediocre service. It can probably even survive running out of draft beer on a Friday evening. But when a place spends so much effort trying to become something modern and stylish that it forgets how to be a good pub, it’s missed the mark by a mile.”

  “We ordered ploughman’s for lunch on Saturday but found it disappointing. 1 small cube of cheese, ham shredded and put in a ramekin pickled gherkins , chopped tomatoes and a piece of toasted sour dough. There was no pickles so I went and asked for some but was told the pickles were the gerkins. ! You can’t have a ploughman’s without chutney. Come on The George BRING OUT THE BRANSTON.”

  “We came for Sunday Lunch, The service was fantastic can’t fault it. But the food was poor, potatoes not crispy, real lack of veg. Yorkshire pudding was great. No spoons given with condiments, something that really annoys me. Also service charge added to the bill, something I am not a fan of Food 2/5 Service 5/5”

  “We had an excellent meal at The George last night. Such a warm welcoming pub with a great atmosphere. Every course was delicious, we treated ourselves to a Tomahawk sharer steak which was cooked to perfection and the burrata salad was the best I’ve had anywhere! It was a lovely night with friendly and attentive service. We could even take the dog which was an added bonus! A brilliant local pub - we will be back!!”
