About The Anchor
Two kitchens run side by side at The Anchor, a gastropub on Ham Grn in Bristol, where a Caribbean and Jamaican menu sits alongside traditional English pub cooking. Diners can order curried goat, jerk or ackee and salt fish, or stay with fish and chips, beef pie with mushy peas or a sirloin steak, across a menu of around 17 dishes. Dumplings work as a starter and barbecue chicken wings turn up among the Caribbean orders, with battered fish and onion rings on the fried side. The pub is recently under new management with a new chef, who comes out to talk with diners at the table. Bookings are taken for large family groups, and food for bigger tables can arrive staggered rather than all together. Waitresses take orders and check on tables while separate staff work the bar, which pours pints and a selection of drinks. The open-plan interior reads more like a social club than a traditional pub. It opens daily, welcomes dogs, and runs a quiz night.

Customer Review Summary
The Caribbean side of the menu is what reviewers return to most, described as lovely and full of flavour: the curried goat draws particular praise as rich and warming, and a family table of nine singled out the dumplings as a big hit alongside a mix of Caribbean and traditional mains that arrived hot and fresh. Close behind, several mention the crisp, non-greasy batter on the fish and onion rings and the barbecue chicken wings, noted as not deep fried. Staff come up repeatedly as friendly and welcoming, with one group saying they were treated like VIPs, and one diner recalls the chef coming out for a chat. The complaints cluster on the non-Caribbean dishes, with one regular reporting burnt burgers, fatty or gristly steak and gammon too salty to eat, plus long staggered waits at larger tables. Another found the layout more social club than pub, lacking a cosy feel, and one reviewer suggests the owners post an updated menu online.

“Popped in for a pint and some lunch. The curried goat is goated. So good, rich, warming and satisfying. They were out of jerk, but the bbq chicken wings were amazing. Not deep fried. …”

“Didn't eat so can't comment on the food, but the menu looks fantastic. Really friendly service and a great selection of drinks. Only negative is the layout. Feels more like a social club than a pub, doesn't have a cosy feel that would entice you back unfortunately.”

“I had a couple of wonderful meals at The Anchor, I've even entered the quiz night on one occasion. Really friendly staff and food was exceptional. The whole pub had a really friendly, welcoming vibe. Kelly was super friendly and helpful!”

“Very nice pub food and lovely Jamaican menu as well, would recommend if in the area. Would advise the owners to maybe put the menu/updated prices on here as nearly didn’t come here when trying to decide what to have due to this and would’ve hated to miss out on the food here.”
