About The Railway
The Railway is a pub at 37 Chapeltown Rd in Bolton that welcomes dogs, with a large beer garden at the back and picnic benches for sitting out with them. The kitchen cooks fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce, and a vegan version of the dish sits on the menu alongside other vegan and vegetarian options. Behind the bar are gins, beers including craft beers, wine and cocktails, plus low and no alcohol choices. Live entertainment and gigs take place at the pub, and the calendar also includes brunches and party events. A small car park serves guests who arrive by car.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is the dish reviewers raise most, and opinion is split. One diner praises soft, juicy battered fish with very good runny mushy peas, while another calls a later portion chewy, with too much batter around a small fish and chips that seemed to have sat too long. The same reviewer found the vegan fish tasteless and stringy. Close behind, a cheese and bacon burger is called one of the best in years, and the mash is described as tasty and the portions decent. Pub grub is generally called freshly cooked and good value, and several describe a great vibe and friendly staff, including a lively night for a live act. The recurring complaints are practical. Two visits for food each found more than one wanted dish unavailable, and one meal arrived not very hot. One diner's gyros came covered in sour cream despite a request to leave it off, and the buffalo tacos came with plain rice, while staff stayed busy chatting. A birthday diner recalls a barmaid's daughter making a handmade card.

“Went for a bite to eat and a few drinks as part of my birthday celebrations, Never been before but did Decorator the place in the late 80s ( Bit of useless information) . Service was excellent and we enjoyed the food which was freshly cooked very good and well priced, Staff were excellent and locals friendly, But the best bit was the Bar maids Daughter made me a Birthday Card when she found out it was my Birthday, She was lovely with very good manners etc, a credit to mum. All in all a enjoyable start to my 70th. Thank you .”

“I visited The Railway earlier today with my dad, having never been previously. Firstly, from the car park to the main entrance and where we sat inside, the surface was perfectly flat for my electric wheelchair. We shared a fish and chips which was £12 because it’s a Friday and it came with peas;(I chose mushy peas), tartare sauce and a drink included. I had a very nice Coke Zero and my wife had 0.0% Moretti. There were two pieces of soft and juicy battered fish with nice chips, very good runny mushy peas with no skins and tasty tartare sauce. The atmosphere was perfect and the background music wasn’t too loud. Staff checked if we were okay a few times and were helpful. We enjoyed it. 10/10.experience I am sure we’ll visit again! 😃 The beer garden looks accessible. We didn’t ask if they have a disabled toilet but I guess there is.”

“It's got such a great vibe, super welcoming and lively, perfect for a chill evening. The drinks are excellent, with something for everyone, and the food is proper tasty pub grub that hits the spot every time. Plus, the staff are always friendly and on the ball. Definitely a top pick for a good time!”

“Ordered chicken shawarma gyros, asked the girl behind the bar if i could have it without sour cream but arrived covered in it, also ordered buffalo tacos with spicy rice which came with just plain rice. No one came over asking how was the food as they was too busy talking to each other. Never even said anything as we were leaving. Not good customer service.”
