About Birchanger Sports & Social Club

Birchanger Sports & Social Club is a bar in Bishops Stortford, at 229 Birchanger Ln, where the regulars play petanque in the beer garden. The bar carries a wide selection of beers, spirits and wine, and the food menu includes sea bass, a plant burger and chocolate fudge cake. Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the food, with a chilli jacket potato described as better than home cooking and a sea bass lunch called the best one diner had eaten. Close behind are the value and the welcome from staff, with several calling the prices great and the drinks reasonably priced for members. The bar gets praise for a wide selection of beers, spirits and wine, and one reviewer notes it is the local CAMRA club of the year. Pétanque with the regulars, a beer garden evening and Thursday bingo come up as part of the draw. One reviewer held a christening buffet for a large group arranged at short notice and said the wings and buffet went down well. The caveats are narrower. One diner with allergies found only a plant burger to eat and felt the curry and fish dishes had gone. Another reviewer, a longtime family member, objected to being told each person needed their own membership and that non-members could only attend the Monday quiz once more, and said hot chocolate had twice run out for lack of milk.

“Food and drink are amazing for the price as a member. Non members are made welcome if a member signs them in, I brought my uncle down for the day as a guest who was made very welcome and offered a game of pétanque by the regulars which made his day and then we had lunch and he said it was the best sea bass he had ever eaten in 89 years. Thanks BSSC. On top of that if you are a member the drinks are a steal and it is the local CAMRA club of the year !”

“i'm sad to be writing this but i'm afraid we.. haven't received a very welcoming return to our club.. we've alway's been members as long as i can remember..🤔 family also have been.. members since then, since covid thing's have changed somewhat.. but the attitude now is everyone has to have their own membership which okay fair play- i was told by a staff member.. Or.. maybe the manager i'm not sure? sorry! it's only £30 to join.. this as maybe, but i feel it's unfair to pay full membership when we're 3/4 of the way through the year.. i politely explained i will join but at the start of the new year.. my husband's a member, we've recently started going to the weekly quiz on a Monday eve.. costing £2 per person our friend comes with us= £6 we buy a couple of rounds of drinks, snacks & always end up with a hot drink.. although twice now we haven't been able to have a hot chocolate ☕ as alway's not enough milk? so averaging £30 per visit.. we've been told we have one more visit left as two none member's or we can't go.. anymore.. perhap's i'v cut of my nose to spite my face, but i don't like being told what to do & more so why don't you join it's only £30!! That's fine! We're going try a different venue for the time being where you're not treated like children & where they're grateful for a regular visit.. Disappointed.. thankyou to our quiz master though (sorry for not.. remembering you're name?!) for tryin to amend this at the recent committee meeting.. best regards paul'sally'& Linda aka The "Happy- Monday" Or not so "Happy.. Monday's!!" now! 🤨 See ya! wouldn't want to be ya!! Lol! 👋😂”

“Visited this place a couple of times now with the family. Called in today on route back to Leeds from Kent. Beats any motorway services. Better food and better prices. Great service too. Lovely staff. 5* from us.”

“Following a meal I played petanque with the local club who welcome new members. The food was very good value for money, I had a set meal of sausage eggs and chips followed by chocolat fudge cake, ice cream and coffee. A great way to spend a pleasant summer evening enjoying the sunshine in the beer garden. Highly recommended.”
