About The Scallop Shell
The Scallop Shell is a family-run fish and seafood restaurant at 22 Monmouth Pl in Bath, where the seafood sits on ice in a bathtub at the entrance. Chips are cut daily in a dedicated spud room, and they come with the fish and chips, made with haddock and served with mushy peas and tartar sauce on a scallop shell. Scallops are another dish on the menu. A Fisherman's Lunch deal runs at lunchtime, so the midday visit has its own set offering. Tables are spread across the ground floor and an upstairs level, with space for larger parties. The restaurant opens daily. At the end of the meal, the team hands over a gold coin with the bill.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is what most reviewers praise first: crisp batter, juicy haddock that falls apart, and chunky chips that taste fresh rather than greasy, served with mushy peas and tartar sauce that two diners call delicious. Scallops come close behind, described as sweet, tender and a flavour sensation, while the fish cakes arrive hot and crispy. Individual diners also single out the mussels, a ray wing with lemon and capers, and the prawns. Servers are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, and the upstairs terrace earns several mentions. The main complaints concern value and detail. One reviewer found the lunch deal portion small, especially the fish, which also had two small bones, and noted the regular haddock is larger and cheaper. Another thought the prawns expensive for the portion and asked that they be deveined, and a third found the fish mild enough to want hot sauce. Several say the restaurant gets busy and suggest reserving. One diner was handed a gold coin with the bill.

“I visited this place for lunch a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely lovely! The service was impeccable and the food, I had the fish and chips with mushy peas, was absolutely delicious. The chips were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and the fish fell apart in my mouth that’s how good it was. I can 100% recommend visiting this restaurant!”

“Bright colourful interiors, tastefully done. Great service, very helpful staff Portion size for the Fisherman's Lunch was small, specially the fish. Even for someone with a small appetite like me. So not good value. Specially as the regular haddock portions are much larger and bit cheaper! A cup of tea doesn't make up for it 😀. Had to fill up on chips which i wasnt very happy about. And the fish had 2 small bones which I wasn't expecting at all. The freshly made mushy peas and tartar sauce were really delicious.”

“We had an excellent visit, well looked after by the staff and overall loved the food. The traditional fish and chips was exceptional, fresh, not grease, had seconds just to be sure I was full. Especially loved the well prepared ray wing, perfect fish, perfectly cooked and excellent blend of lemon and capers, a taste of the sea in one plate all located on Bath, who knew. The prawns were nice too, a tad expensive for portion size and please please devein them before cooking. Would certainly love to return soon. The ladies that served us were professional, knew what dishes to recommend and really cared for a great service, all with a smile and a cherry on top. Thank you all for your service from the chefs to the waitress'.”

“01.08.2026: Fantastic scallops, plus fishcakes and DF wild atlantic prawns to start. Amazing lobster, and perfectly cooked DF seabream - incredible romesco sauce and DF new potatoes!!! Excellent fresh seafood. 😍 Lovely local ciders recommended by Josh and Logan. 🍻 Wonderful warm hospitality from Josh, Logan and Carey. 🤗 Highly recommended. 🙌💯🤩 See you all again on Monday for lunch! 😃 03.08.2026: Incredible scallops and amazing fish and chips with 'Fisherman's Lunch deal' & monkfish a la carte menu.🙌💯🤩 Note: Monday's menu changes, as advised by Logan as they are unable to get fresh lobster or bream. Thank you again to Logan (a font of foodie knowledge, wishing you well with your future kitchen career) and Carey for looking after us so nicely again. 🤗 Love the fishy artworks by @GeorgieLetters, & congratulations guys on your multiple AA rosette and Fish& Chips awards. Great outdoor upstairs terrace and bbq area too. Make sure to make reservations, they get super busy especially on weekends and even on a Monday lunch!!! #visitbath #discoverwithgoantolondon #hiddengems”

“I missed the 15 pound lunch deal for fish & chips and I thought I would skip this place. However, when I walked by and felt the vibe of the restaurant with a lot of reservations, I gave a shot for the dinner. And what did I order? Fish & chips lol. It is just simply beautiful piece of haddock deep fried served with mushy peas and tartar sauce on a scallop shell. You can tell how crispy the fish is by just the picture! Inside it is surprisingly juicy. The flavor is on the mild side so don't be afraid to ask for hot sauce. It is a wonderful experience eating here. Respect the British food lol! PS: they give me a gold coin along with the bill. Cool gimmick!”
