Customer Review Summary
Friendly staff are the most repeated draw. Reviewers describe a team that moved a 1pm booking to noon without fuss, and waitress service one diner rated 10/10. Food comes close behind, led by big roast dinners. One table praised the chicken and gravy but found the potatoes and veg short on seasoning. Others single out burgers with thick bacon and thin fries, light-battered fish, pakoras, arancini, a shareable Camembert, tacos, croquettes, lamb rump and Thai green curry. Complaints are fewer but specific. One diner found the calamari oily and a bit rubbery, though the Thai-style scallops were smoky and rather good. Another got food that arrived only just warm, with menus that were never explained, in a room that felt flat and slightly claustrophobic with no music. Several say the pub fills quickly and suggest ringing ahead to reserve, and one booked party believes they might otherwise have been turned away. One Sunday visitor who arrived just as the doors opened got a table, and the room filled fast behind them.

“A very large pub with a feel that it could be very foody at times. I’ve heard rumours that customers can get turned away if they only want to drink, but that wasn’t the case on our visit. It’s lost some of its ’old school’ atmosphere but it was still more than acceptable; comfortable, clean, and relatively quiet, and very nicely free from dogs. Appears to have WiFi but the password is kept secret. Some bar stools are available but they could do with more because a couple using a laptop was unfortunately hogging them. Overall, I would recommend it.”

“Overall a good experience! It is a short walk from the Royal Cresent. Stopped in on a Sunday just as they opened so we got a table but it filled up fast. As others said, I'd recommend calling ahead to reserve a table if you want to secure a spot. Everything on the menu is locally sourced and detailed on the back of the menu. We ordered the chicken and beef Sunday roasts. The chicken and gravy were really good. Potato and veggies could have used more seasoning. There is a dedicated kids menu with mains, drinks, and desserts listed. The staff was very friendly and provided good service creating an enjoyable atmosphere. The place is dog friendly and even has a back patio/garden.”

“The staff at The Marlborough Tavern were friendly and pleasant, but overall the experience was a bit mixed. The atmosphere felt quite flat and slightly claustrophobic, especially with no music playing. The food and drinks menus weren’t really explained to us, and when the food arrived it was only just warm rather than hot and the pork was borderline too pink (I understand it’s more pink near the bone). There were some positives, mainly the nice staff, but a few details let the visit down.”

“Came on account of the Calamari - ordered two starters and a cake - service polite and efficient- the pub unexpectedly busy - Calamari on the oily side and a bit rubbery (£9) but the scallops Thai style(£13) - smoky - rather good Quest for good Calamari continues - Bathwick Boatman reliably the best now”

“What a great pub! Always walked past but never popped in. Lovely garden, wonderful welcoming staff.. and the food is delicious! I visited on a Tuesday and I decided to check out the food and it is simply delicious. I wasn’t expecting to have to book, luckily they had a table free but the place was packed. Recommend ringing ahead to make sure they have availability. Thoroughly recommend and it’s dog friendly too which is a big bonus.”
