About The Boater, Bath

The Boater is a Fuller's pub in Bath, on Argyle St by the weir, and it opens daily. A cellar bar and a private Rec room give the pub space for weddings and private lunches, so groups can book a room of their own. Pizza is the main food, with a pizza truck serving evening food. Screens show live sports such as the England game and Wimbledon, and the bar carries a selection of drinks. Bookings for lunch and group events are taken in advance.

Customer Review Summary

Pizza is the item reviewers mention most, and opinions split. A large family party chose a pizza buffet of half a pizza each plus sides, and a wedding group praised the evening pizza truck. Two diners report pizzas charred black underneath, with staff saying this was part of their cooking process. Private hire earns the warmest praise: the covered and heated terrace, the rec room and the cellar bar were described as smooth to organise, and the kitchen adapted a chicken side for a gluten-free guest. Visitors also mention a warm welcome, lots of choice of drinks and the spot by the weir. Service complaints recur, though. One reviewer says a bar worker would not share a fan on a hot evening. Another was refused a switch from men's doubles to the Wimbledon women's semifinal. One reviewer reports toilets without running water or soap. A Father's Day lunch booking was cut back to pizza only by an email sent shortly before the meal.

“Do not order the bbq chicken pizza, it is a regular pizza with 2 days chicken cubes and bbq sauce. Pizza was the only thing in the menu. The place is fine for a drink but not for eating.”

“We recently booked The Boater for a private lunch meal in their Rec room and an evening do in their cellar bar/terrace area after a registry office wedding in Bath. It was exactly what we wanted and the whole day went very smoothly. Erin & Amelia were so helpful during the booking & organising months, and then on the day the whole team were really friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The location is awesome being right be the weir, and obviously Bath is such a beautiful city that it really enhances the experience for guests. The atmosphere in the evening was so good too - the private bar and capability for evening food with their pizza truck just topped everything off. Would 100% recommend to anybody after a rustic, laid-back day with a really smooth organising process. Thanks again all! James & Charlotte.”

“Popped in for a few drinks and couldn't believe the price they charged. Extortionate. £40 for 4 drinks. No prices on display, which is clearly deliberate. Felt very much like they exist to just fleece tourists. Had to clear glasses from the table before sitting, also smelled vaguley of bins. We won't be back. One to avoid.”

“I tried to watch the Wimbledon women’s SEMIFINALS the other day. I kept asking the waiter and he said he was going to try and find the channel. He put it on for about 10 min. And then they changed it to a doubles men’s doubles match. Then there was a change in staff. I asked the new waiter to changed it back to the women’s. and he said no because there was another person upstairs watching the doubles. And because they could only show one match they couldn’t change it. I tried to explain I was there before and that this was unfair. He then told me that just because I wanted a different match didn’t make it unfair. And that “he had made his decision” Horrible service, no empathy and zero compromise. The men’s doubles game was just starting and the women’s was on the last few games in the third set. Would definitely not be coming here again. The staff made me feel so bad. Especially unable to support women’s tennis.”

“A pretty good pub but service was awful. We came to watch the England game and paid £10 each plus drinks on a lovely sunny evening. The temperature in the bar was very high but the bar had a lovely big fan on it. Unfortunately there was one staff member who insisted that the fan was there and she had to protect her health and was not prepared to share the industrial fan with the customers. Everyone in our group and beyond asked politely for her to turn the fan to try and keep us cool as paying customers but selfishly she refused and said her health needed to be prioritised. We had spent in excess of £150 in the bar as a group of 50+ friends that meet up once a year so asked if we could speak to the Manager as the older ladies in the group were struggling with the heat. When relaying what was happening with the fan to the Manager we were met with ‘I have to prioritise my staff’ Having managed service based businesses myself for many years, I really do appreciate staff welfare but also respect my customers and their comfort. We were not made to feel heard or that as customers our needs also mattered. Customer centric is not at the heart of this pub sadly.”
