About Ippuku Tea House

Ippuku Tea House is a Japanese restaurant and tea house at 15 Blake St in York, run by Japanese tea specialists with a shop that sells Japanese products. The kitchen cooks homemade recipes from local Japanese residents of York, and nearly the whole menu is gluten free, with vegan and veggie options as well. The tofu teishoku comes with rice, miso soup, pickles and small side dishes, and okonomiyaki sits alongside it on the savory side. Tea is the focus of the drinks, and the matcha cheesecake is one of the matcha sweets served with it. A separate lunch menu runs next to the main one. The shop stocks snacks and ingredients for cooking. The house opens every day except Tuesdays.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the teishoku and donburi sets, with the tofu teishoku and the teriyaki chicken set or teriyaki chicken-mayo donburi named repeatedly, alongside rice, miso soup and small side dishes. Close behind are the okonomiyaki, gyoza, onigiri and gyudon, plus matcha and green tea paired with matcha roll cake, matcha cheesecake or lemon cake. Several praise the friendly staff and the fresh, homemade food, and a number describe a small, warm, calming room. Gluten free and vegan eating draws particular comment: one reviewer with a gluten and soy fibre intolerance phoned ahead and received chickpea miso, okonomiyaki and a mushroom dish with plum dressing made with tamari. The caveats are modest. A few call it a little pricey, one says the gyoza were fine but nothing special, and another wasn't keen on the coffee. One reviewer waited a while for the server to take their order when it was busy. Another ordered from the lunch menu around half past ten and still got lunchtime onigiri after a slightly longer wait.

“Amazing food and service! I phoned a few days in advance to reserve and check if there would be anything vegan on the menu that I could eat with a gluten and soy fiber intolerance. A very big ask! I was expecting onigiri if I was lucky. They very kindly prepared chickpea miso, okonomiyaki and a mushroom dish with plum dressing (made with tamari). The whole experience was fantastic.”

“Went here with my friends today. The staff were lovely and very patient with us as we decided on what we wanted. Very quick service and delicious food. Some of the stuff was quite expensive but definitely worth it for the amount you get and how well you get treated. Lovely atmosphere inside and out despite being a small building. 100% would go again to try other things on the menu.”

“Been here a few times and still really like it. The okonomiyaki was excellent, probably my favourite dish this time. The tofu set was really good too, especially with the rice, miso soup and little side dishes. The gyoza were fine, but nothing special compared with the rest of the food. I wasn’t keen on the coffee, but that’s just personal taste. Everything else was great and I’d definitely come back next time I’m in York.”

“Love this place and been visiting ever since they opened. I always go on my Birthday and other special days and every time I’m in York, I could not recommend Ippuku Tea House enough 5 stars across the board. What a lovely place, fantastic staff and a great menu with perfectly cooked food.”

“Excellent!✨ It's a small restaurant in York with a very Japanese atmosphere. I tried the matcha green tea and the Teriyaki Chicken set, which was fantastic. I loved the savory and tender chicken, and the side dishes complemented it perfectly, making it a truly enjoyable meal. They also have interesting snacks and ingredients for cooking at reasonable prices. The staff are friendly and provide excellent service. If it gets busy, they let you know immediately. After the meal, I had the lemon cake, which was also delicious and perfect for afternoon tea. Finally, I want to thank the restaurant for their thoughtful preparation and for creating such a wonderful experience.”
